If Doojoon wasn’t an idol his next attempt at fame would have been to become a professional soccer player. He’s loved the sport since he was young, always finding excuses to put off what he was doing to go outside and kick around a soccer ball for a little while. His earliest dreams consisted of him playing professionally, and he was damn good enough to. So good that most of the people who knew him expected to see him on a professional team one day. Maybe even playing in the World Cup.
It’s been quite some time since Doojoon last dreamt of being a soccer player. He’s not even sure why his dreams changed and he suddenly wanted to become a singer. He doesn’t remember exactly when it happened, or what might have caused it, but he remembers wanting it more than anything in the whole world. He wanted to prove something to people. That he was more than just a good-looking kid with athletic ability. His sudden urge to prove his hidden talents helped him get through the grueling trainee days.
Soccer might have helped him a little too. It acted as a motivator. Years of playing the sport had made him strong and hard willed, a competitor. He wouldn’t give up easily. It also acted as a distraction. When he would have a hard time handling the stress and disappointments that are inevitable when training he’d be able to take his mind off of things by playing a little soccer. Kicking a ball around for just five minutes was enough to help him relax.
Eventually Doojoon found another way to help himself get through those tough days. It came in the form of a boy just six months younger than him. A boy full of smiles and jokes, bubbling over with friendliness. Doojoon immediately gravitated to Yoseob without even realizing it at first, but soon he noticed how he was spending large amounts of time in the boy’s presence. Yoseob made him laugh when he didn’t think he could even smile. Yoseob gave warm words of encouragement when Doojoon thought he was a failure. And Yoseob knew when to simply keep quiet and just offer him comfortable silence. He was exactly what Doojoon needed.
Of course Doojoon knew about love, but he’d never experienced it for himself. He knew of the clichés; sweaty palms, jumbled speech, nervous giggles. He honestly thought that was all a bit ridiculous. Especially because he did not experience any of that even though he knows for a fact that he’s in love with Yoseob. Just like how he doesn’t know when he wanted to become a singer, he doesn’t know when he fell in love. Sure, Doojoon knows the general time period, but he can’t pinpoint an actual moment in time where it happened. It just hit him one day while he was watching Yoseob tell a story to some of the other trainees. A few days later Doojoon and five others (including Yoseob) were told they’d be debuting in a new boy group together and Doojoon was made leader. About a month after that Doojoon finally worked up the courage to tell Yoseob, “I love you.”
Yoseob had smiled back and said, “I love you too, hyung.”
“No. I love you.”
Yoseob stared for a moment, then shrugged and gave Doojoon a quick kiss on the lips. “I’ve been wondering when you’d finally admit to it. I was getting ready to give up on you too.”
Now it was Doojoon’s turn to smile. He grabbed Yoseob’s wrist and pulled the younger boy closer to him before smashing their lips together. He smiled into the kiss, thinking how lucky he was to have fallen for someone like Yoseob.
Yoon Doojoon could’ve been a star soccer player. He could’ve been a household name all across the country, the region, the world. He could’ve made it to the World Cup, playing against other top athletes. Doojoon could’ve been a lot of things if he wasn’t an idol.
But if Doojoon wasn’t an idol, he wouldn’t have fallen in love with a boy whose name is Yang Yoseob.
