Dark sarcasm in the classroom

Oh gods I feel like a teacher 8O

I've managed to land a gig teaching Spanish to a half dozen home school students once a week.  It's about normal as money goes, but it gives me classroom type experience with young children and that is not to be sneezed at.  The upshot is I needed to make up a syllabus to outline my goals/expectations for the course ( Read more... )

I'm glad to hear the MoR entry is going well.

The big thing with that age group is they have really short attention spans. I wouldn't have any one activity that lasts more than ten minutes. Lots of variety and if you can have them be physical that is even better. They are also very literal still so things they can point to or see would be good. For example teaching them the word for feet and shoes then the verb walk. Let them show their feet, shoes and walk around the room while saying the word for walk or march or run.

Thanks!

And double-thanks for the advice :) It's going to be interesting balancing repetition and keeping their attention I can see... At least it'll be a small class.

Small is good as it will be easier to see if they are getting restless as well as giving you a chance to work with them on a more individualized level. The good news is that age level has not yet become cynical so they are usually still excited about learning.

You are a teacher. Ahahaha.

I agree with lil_1337. Honestly my experience with kids is mostly helping out teachers and playing with nieces. I've found that playing with them helps. Maybe you could bring in some educational toys? Kids can spell out really basic words with letter blocks or such.

It's so weird doing the syllabus dance XD

Definitely going to try and come up with games/toys to keep things fun. And we get a recess which is a HUGE help for me :)

Recess is the best part! Hopefully the kids will tire enough from playing to settle down a little in the classroom. :P

I had a very religious coworker once who was so against celebrating Halloween that we had to move an office party to a different date so it wouldn't be a Halloween party.

I wish I could give you advice on keeping kids interested, but I don't have any kids/haven't been around kids that age. One of my LJ friends who is an English teacher in China seems to do a lot of games with her kids. Good luck with it!

I'm glad the writing is going well. It makes me happy when I see authors who seem to be enjoying the creative process. I'm sure all the people who read the entries will appreciate your efforts.
