The best book you've read in the last 12 months
This was a really hard one, as I've read, or re-read several great novels this year, but ultimately the prize goes to Monkey: Folk Novel of China. It's an abridged translation of the poem Journy to the West by Wu Cheng'en by Aurthur Waley. But the story itself is captivating in the way of all the very best bedtime stories. Monkey is a trickster and a scoundrel, but his character does grow and change over the course of the book. I can't speak to how accurate the translation is, but I can tell you that the English flows naturally and if you just want to enjoy the story I can't think of a better book. This story makes great bedtime, or read-aloud reading either for yourself or with kids.
