Just voicing the rumors here.

We get them without our knowledge, as soon as we enter. They suppress mostly or entirely abilities that go beyond the normal human scale. We also know the locations tend to change. They're rather small and difficult to pinpoint, so exploratory surgery is out of the question.

Ugh, that sounds bothersome. But if they are so difficult to pinpoint, how did some people get them out?

Chance, with some people. Others merely try the locations that other people have reported, when they even bothered to report them. Some probably get them out and tell no one the details.

We do know that removal tends to make one VERY sick for a short while. Not sure why, really.
