Summary: SWS thinks about why Linkara will never be on Spooning With Spoony and remembers the first time he met the hero, who had been rather upset at the time.
There’s a reason SWS never invited Linkara to be on the show. Oh, he could be flippant about it and give any number of humorous reasons that all had some measure of truth to them, but the one, real reason was much more serious.
He remembered when everyone went to Chicago for the big fight. He’d tagged along because it was sure to be a show. It was. And it was a great opportunity to meet people. He’d done an episode of his show there, and he’d even met Ask That Guy in hallway, striking up a strange, perverse friendship.
He hadn’t expected to almost literally run into Spoony’s friend in the hat. Or to find him bruised, bleeding and shaking with tears that couldn’t be held back leaking out of his eyes as he tried to put his jacket back on with unsteady hands.
He’d frozen when he’d seen SWS, eyes wide with horror, and for a moment SWS feared that there would be questions, that he’d been caught, but Linkara was too preoccupied with his own pain to care.
"Spoony," He whimpered, and then he was clinging to SWS’s jacket and crying in earnest into SWS’s shoulder.
SWS hated it when people cried.
"Shh, it’s okay. I’ve got you," he muttered, hugging Linkara gently so that he wouldn’t accidentally hurt him any worse and feeling incredibly awkward.
It was so much easier when he was the one who instigated the tears, at least then he actually knew what had caused them and could usually get them to stop.
Linkara flinched at the first touch but didn’t move away, and slowly began to relax as he cried.
"What happened?" SWS asked.
"Ask That Guy. It was... He was..." Linkara managed to say.
"Ah. No need to say more," SWS knew what Ask That Guy was capable of, and he had a pretty good idea of what had happened to Linkara.
"I should have been able to fight him off. I’m The Hero. I’ve got the Magic Gun. I..." Linkara said as he collected himself.
"Hey, don’t think like that. Sometimes people just get the better of you, and you wouldn’t say that about anyone else, so don’t say it about yourself," SWS said.
SWS didn’t know why he was bothering to comfort Linkara. He obviously thought SWS was Spoony, and would have been better off in Spoony’s hands. And it wasn’t like he knew Linkara, everything he knew about him was second hand through Spoony and Insano.
But what he did know about Linkara was enough to make him sad to see such a good person brought so low. SWS didn’t have the greatest moral compass, but it did point North sometimes.
"Let’s get you back to your room, okay? You can clean up and rest," SWS suggested.
Linkara nodded and they walked down the hall to Linkara’s room, Linkara still gripping SWS’s jacket and following him silently.
Linkara took a long shower and came out of the bathroom fully dressed. He looked a little more clear headed, and that was a sign that SWS should cut his visit short before Linkara realized that the man comforting him wasn’t actually his friend.
"Go to sleep, if you can. I’ll tell everyone you came down with food poisoning or something," SWS said.
"Thanks Spoony," Linkara said, voice heavy.
SWS put on his best Spoony smile. "No problem, man. Now sleep,"
SWS had gone straight to Spoony, after that. Spoony wasn’t exactly happy with him after what had happened with Chick and Goggles and Benzaie, but this was important.
"If Linkara talks to you about tonight, just go with it," SWS said.
Spoony’s eyes narrowed. "What did you do now?"
"Honestly nothing," SWS said, holding his hands up in surrender and shaking his head. "It wasn’t me this time, it was Ask That Guy. You found Linkara in the hall and took him back to his room,"
Spoony paled and was halfway out the door when SWS caught him. "He’s trying to sleep. And besides, you just left him. Dressed in completely different clothes. He’s not stupid, are you going to want to explain it right now?"
Spoony glared but sighed and nodded. "You’re right. I’ll wait. Thank you for helping, I guess,"
"Hey, I’m no monster, I wasn’t just going to leave him like that," SWS said.
Spoony looked dubious, but didn’t say anything.
And that was why Linkara would never be on Spooning With Spoony. Because even though he’d thought he was someone else, Linkara had trusted SWS, and SWS had seen him at his lowest. And SWS wasn’t going to betray that unintentional trust and put Linkara through anything even remotely like what had happened with Ask That Guy.
