Summary: Linkara isn't the only person Insano would rather not have stumble upon his night job. Yes. Dark Side of the City-verse
Insano had a habit of looking over to Candi’s street corner throughout the night, mostly because he was bored and because she was a friend. One of the very few people who he could talk to about what he did for a living. It was either her or Linkara, and Insano wasn’t up to baring his soul like that to the hero just yet.
So when he looked over and saw a familiar man in a blue robe talking to Candi, Insano’s mind was made up before he’d even really processed what he’d seen. He was across the street and pulling his goggles out of his pocket in an instant.
“Stop right there, Guy,” Insano said.
Ask That Guy looked over, smiling pleasantly. “Guten Abend, Doctor! Didn’t hear you come up,”
Candi was staring at the two of them in confusion, eyes narrowed.
“Yes, well, I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to leave,” Insano said, sounding braver than he felt. “Run along, Candi,”
Candi was no fool, and took the opportunity to run, headed in the direction of the Palace.
“You know how much I hate being interrupted,” Ask That Guy said, still with the veneer of politeness. He was looking at Insano curiously, taking in the tight jeans and the way his goggles were askew.
Ask That Guy wasn’t stupid, no matter what nonsense he liked to spew when he stole Critic’s camera and answered questions, and when he flicked his gaze over to Insano’s spot at the wall that was now empty, Insano knew that he’d been caught.
Insano had been trying to avoid that. He knew when Ask That Guy liked to visit the prostitutes and he avoided working those nights whenever he could. The only reason he was working tonight was because his son’s birthday was coming up and he wanted to get him some special gifts.
Ask That Guy’s smirk widened, and his eyes lit up with newfound knowledge.
“Well this is a surprise, Doctor. Tell me, does Spoony know? Does Linkara?”
Ask That Guy seemed to take particular joy in contemplating the hero’s reaction, for some reason.
“Yes,” Insano said. It was only half a lie, and Insano was not going to let Ask That Guy think he had anything that he could hold over Insano’s head.
“I see,” Ask That Guy said, and it didn’t seem like he believed Insano.
He stepped closer to Insano, and Insano was torn between stepping back to avoid him and standing his ground. Ask That Guy reached out to take Insano’s goggles off, and Insano smacked his hand away.
“That’s not for you to do,” Insano said coldly.
Ask That Guy’s eyes narrowed, and Insano wished he had brought his freeze ray or something more powerful than the electro-shocker he kept in his pocket. He got the feeling that it wouldn’t be enough to take Ask That Guy out if it came down to it.
“And here I was being nice,” Ask That Guy said. “First you send away my company for the night and then you insult me. I’m hurt, truly. I think you owe me,”
Insano shook his head and was about to retort that he didn’t owe Ask That Guy anything when he was stopped by a confident voice.
“I don’t think so. He’s got other plans for tonight,” Linkara said, pointing the magic gun straight at Ask That Guy’s head.
Ask That Guy didn’t even tense, just raised his hands amiably. “Then he’s all yours, Linkara. I wouldn’t want to step on any toes,”
Ask That Guy leered at Linkara and Linkara tightened his grip on the magic gun. They watched Ask That Guy leave, and only when he was out of sight did Linkara lower the gun.
“I hate him,” Linkara said in disgust.
“What the hell was that, hero, swooping in like that? I had it under control,” Insano said.
It was a blatant lie, and they both knew it. If Insano had been in his lab, it would have been another story, but out on the street he didn’t have his weapons of Science with him.
“Candi came to the Palace and walked right up to me and said that you were talking to some creep in a blue robe and had sent her away. And obviously I knew where that was headed, so I came to find you,” Linkara said.
Insano sighed. “Right. I think I’m done for the night, take me to the Palace? I think I need to talk to Candi and tell her to stay away from Ask That Guy,”
“Sure,” Linkara said, and when he took Insano’s hand Insano allowed it, unsure if the move was meant to comfort him or the hero himself. Insano took the comfort while it lasted, because there was no way that Ask That Guy was just going to let things be, now that he knew.
