Title: Meetings and Sortings
Author: achika_chan
Pairing: Gen
Ratingng: G
Summary: Young Spoony and Wayne take the Hogwarts Express and get Sorted. Wayne and Linkara start off on the wrong foot.

Walking through the barrier to Platform 9 ¾ was the most disorienting thing Spoony had ever done.

“How does that work?” his twin asked in frustration, eyeing the wall they’d just passed through suspiciously. “The barrier was solid!”

Wayne had been in a constant state of frustration ever since they’d gotten their letters and someone from the school had shown them magic was real. It was endlessly amusing to Spoony.

“It’s magic,” a boy next to them said.

“No, really? I never would have guessed!” Wayne said, rolling his eyes. “But there has to be some explanation for how it works other than ‘I don’t know, it just does,’ You can’t just ignore physics!”

The other boy looked confused, and Spoony realized that there was something off about the way he was dressed. He was wearing normal clothes, but they didn’t fit quite right, and he was wearing a kind of heavy looking jacket despite it being summer, and he had a hat that was decades out of fashion.

“Oh, you’re a wizard,” Spoony said.

“And you aren’t?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“…Fair point,” Spoony said. “Ignore my brother, he’s finding it hard to cope. I’m Spoony,”

“I am not ‘finding it hard to cope’, I just like understanding what’s going on around me!” Wayne snapped.

“I’m Linkara. You guys are Muggle-borns?” Linkara asked. “My grandmother was a Muggle-born,”

“Yeah. That means you probably know what’s going to happen when we get to the school, right?” Spoony asked.

Linkara grinned. “Harvey told me all about it, I can’t wait,”

“The school sent someone to talk to us, but they didn’t do a very good job of explaining things,” Wayne said.

“Well, there’s four houses, right? Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. And the Sorting Hat decides which house you belong to, and you stay in that dorm and eat and have classes with that house and compete against the others for points and in Quidditch,” Linkara explained as they made their way to the train and found a compartment.

“How is a hat going to decide which house you belong in?” Wayne asked.

Linkara shrugged. “It looks into your head, and if you’re brave you go to Gryffindor, if you’re smart you go to Ravenclaw, if you’re ambitious you get sent to Slytherin, and everyone else is in Hufflepuff,”

“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard,” Wayne said.

Linkara gave him a level look. “You’re kind of mean, aren’t you?”

Spoony smacked Wayne upside the head. “Don’t be a jerk, you jerk,”

Wayne huffed in annoyance and pulled a book out of his bag, pointedly ignoring the two of them for the rest of the train ride.

Wayne had been right, the Sorting Hat was stupid Spoony thought bitterly. It had actually laughed when it had been put on Spoony’s head.

You are quite the angry young man, aren’t you? But there’s only one place for your loyalty and hard work. Maybe it’ll soften you a bit, though I doubt it. HUFFLEPUFF

So now Spoony was sulking in the middle of big grins and yellow and black while his brother was sorted almost immediately into Ravenclaw. They met each others’ eyes and shrugged helplessly. Spoony hadn’t really even considered that they wouldn’t be sorted into the same house.

Linkara was sent to the Gryffindor table, which was also terrible. Spoony’d kind of been hoping that he wouldn’t immediately be separated from his new friend, but that looked like it was too much to ask for.

Spoony was upset until they were led to the dorm and the Prefect mentioned oh so casually that the kitchens were right there and that it was super easy to get in once you figured out the trick. And the common room was nice too, really cozy. It made Spoony think of Hobbits and their houses.

“I feel like I just stepped into the Shire,” one of Spoony’s fellow First Years said dryly, and Spoony looked over to see a taller boy with dark hair.

“I was just thinking that same thing. I’m Spoony,”

“Phelous,”

“Want to help me figure out how to get into the kitchens, Phelous?” Spoony asked.

“Sounds like a good plan,”

“Oh, can I help too? That sounds like a lot of fun!” said the really excitable First Year that made Spoony want to fidget just looking at him and his seemingly constant movement.

“Sure, Film Brain,” Phelous said.

Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad after all.
