Title: Illusions
Author: achika_chan
Rating: PG
Pairing: Gen, some Wayne/Spoonette
Summary: Linksano takes advantage of the Holodeck on Comicron 1, just not the way Linkara probably imagined.

Linksano entered the command for his most used Holodeck scenario and entered, stepping into the entryway of a nice, suburban house. He could smell food cooking in the kitchen. He took his coat off and hung it on the coat rack.

“Oscar? Is that you?” a female voice yelled from the kitchen. He could hear the clattering of plates being taken out of the cabinet.

“Yes, yes it’s me! I’m not late, am I?” Linksano asked.

“Like, as if. You’re never late. Help me set the table?” Spoonette asked as Linksano made his way into the kitchen.

“Of course,” Linksano said.

Spoonette chattered happily as they worked, but to be honest Linksano wasn’t paying that much attention, listening more to her voice than her words.

“Hello, little brother,” said someone behind him, just before a pair of hands landed on his shoulders.

Linksano smiled. “Hi, Wayne. Get caught up in another experiment?”

Wayne nodded, a pleased expression on his face. “Yes! It’s really quite fascinating. You see, I’m -“

“No Science at the dinner table!” Spoonette said, dishing out the food.

Properly chastened, Linksano and Wayne both sat at the table.

“Oscar Jr! Dinner!” Spoonette yelled, and a few seconds later there was the loud thumping of young feet.

Oscar Jr. appeared immediately. “Hi Uncle Oscar!” he chirped, climbing into the chair next to Linksano.

“How was your day?” Linksano asked the five year old, who immediately launched into telling Linksano everything that had happened.

“Remember to actually chew your food, son,” Wayne said.

Linksano didn’t say much over the course of the meal, but he didn’t have too, because the others were more than happy to fill any gaps. They were really very well programmed, Linksano had spent days compiling the data and forming it into holograms of his loved ones. Spoonette wrinkled her nose and blew her hair out of her face when it got in the way just like she had in high school. Wayne tapped his fingers on the table excitedly when he talked, like he’d done their entire lives.

Of course, Linksano had to do some guessing, too. How did Spoonette style her hair now? Did Wayne finally give up on glasses and get contacts? But it was worth it, for the illusion that these were the real people he loved, who had grown and changed with him, and weren’t permanently frozen as college students.

Linksano watched as Wayne and Spoonette had a playful squabble that ended in a kiss. Oscar Jr laughed, and Linksano smiled.

Even in his fantasies, in a world he completely controlled, he had lost the fight for Spoonette’s heart, but it was worth it to see Wayne so happy. They had the life now that they always should have had, the life they deserved. The life they might have had if Vyce hadn’t come to their universe.

After dinner everyone went to the living room. Oscar Jr played with some coloring books with Spoonette, and Linksano asked Wayne for some perspective on a problem he was having with an experiment of his own. Having that second mind to bounce ideas off of and talk problems through with was a god send. Nimue had snuck in enough of this universe’s Dr. Insano into Wayne that he came up with ideas that Linksano never would have. He hadn’t spoken to his real brother in years, but this was almost as good.

But everything good has to come to an end, and it was time for Linksano to leave. He kissed them all goodbye and hugged them tight and put on his coat and goggles. He stepped back into the real world and shut the door behind him.

“Nimue, disengage the Holodeck,” Linksano said, staring at the floor. Linkara would be asking about the progress he was making on the security upgrades soon, and he still had a lot of work to do.
