Buuuut.. there are definitely issues with the game. The ground combat is very clunky and movement is quite awkward, the TSing seems a bit odd, since I have yet to find another place with an R&D section beyond Memory Alpha.
Overall though, I find it an amusing timewaster while nothing else is going on.
edit:
Also I forgot to mention another great addition to STO.. the ability for players to create missions for others to play ingame.

The Foundry missions are indeed the greatest part of the game. At least, the well-known and highly rated ones are. The players who created them have clearly put an absolute ton of effort in and the amount of story, intrigue, choices and at times hilarity makes them well worth the time to play through at least once.
About shields, well to be honest in STO they're much like in any other space game. They are another layer of HP you have to chew through first to get to the gooey middle bits and they can be regenerated in various ways, with different weapon types being more suitable for taking out either or hull. It's the same in Eve too. The difference here is that you can play about with shield facing by turning so the incoming fire is hitting the sides with stronger shielding.
And for me the issues, specifically the bugginess, are a real drag.
