Suddenly it hit me. I had been placing way too much importance on Facebook. I had so many contacts who I could only reach through that website. Pictures that I would never be able to get back again. Moderator privileges. Why was I living my life on Facebook?Bingo. What really gets to me about all these social sites is how they create emotional incentives for people to do work for free. By that I mean, we all create content - comments, posts, essays, photos, videos, tags, metadata - the lifeblood for any web business - for free. We give it all to whoever owns and hosts the website - Facebook, LJ, Flickr, whoever. And in return, we get some things, like a space to interact, a nice user interface, ease of use, and the emotional satisfaction of our public interactions. Is it worth it? The only real answer has always been to keep copies of all of our content, to make sure we really still own it and to strive to create and maintain our own communities that we own ( ... )

Yes and yes again. I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm working more on blogging now for this very reason.
