Is Nietzsche a Religion?

I have always had a strong distaste for mysticism. How is mysticism any different from mainstream religion anyway? You take one person with a delusion and you call him or her a schizophrenic. You take a small group of people with a delusion and you call them a cult. You take a large group of people with a delusion and you call them a religion. ( Read more... )

What Nietzsche have you actually read?

Everything except Beyond Good and Evil from cover to cover. Though I did read most of it.

In that case, I'm really confused as to how you could interpret his writings as promoting mysticism, in any sense of the word. In the interest of (healthy and respectful! heh) conversation, could you explain exactly where you're getting this idea from (aside from your somewhat general "Ubermensch" argument)?

It's not that I disagree with you -- just that I don't think Nietzsche would necessarily disagree with you, either!

"I don't believe that Nietzsche was a mystic but I do believe that he encouraged mysticism."

Thus Spoke Zarathustra anyone? I still love the book but come on.

Aside from music, don't forget Ayn Rand and Objectivism, which had and has many marks of a cult, is also just warmed-over Nietszche.

Crowley never wanted worshipers. And that's all I gotta say about that...

Maybe he wanted to teach his worshippers not to worship him?

Indeed, he did that on several occasions. I think you'd find "Perdurabo" very interesting. It's a good Crowley bio, warts and all. Check it out sometime if you want to.
