This week saw the culmination of a lot of people's hard work. We held a rally against guns on campus. A few hundred students walked out of class and headed down to the Texas Capitol ( Read more... )

Rep. Driver and Sen. Wentworth brought up Virginia Tech first. I've certainly heard members of SCCC refer to it as well. Without that issue, no one would be taking this idea seriously.

I wouldn't have become involved if it weren't for people citing Virginia Tech. I'd still disagree with the legislation, but it's absolutely maddening to see people using our tragedy to push an issue that nearly everyone close to the issue disagrees with.

We're not talking about you, though. You might have good judgement 99.9% of the time. Other people do not. Some states do not require a training course; others do; but the permit is valid in Texas regardless. And I remain thoroughly unconvinced--this from years of teaching martial arts--that after ten hours of training anyone is prepared to know whether deadly force is necessary.

Look--if it were concealed carry on its own merits, that would be one thing. But they're advertising this as a way to stop school shootings. They're using Virginia Tech to do it, even though all the survivors say guns wouldn't have helped. That takes a lot of balls. It's also disgusting.
