Vivi's Useful Notes #1 - Interdimensional Travel

Nov 07, 2010 22:55

[Vivi sits cross-legged on the floor of the library, surrounded by sheets of paper and datascreens, all covered in text, symbols and glyphs. He looks at the camera with a serious expression]

Um, hi everyone. I wanted to do a recording for people about some things I've learned over the past day or two. Mr. Holly's helping me record this because I wanted to make it so everyone can read it, maybe for any new people we might get later on.

[He smiles before picking up a piece of paper. In bold, black letters is the phrase VIVI'S USEFUL NOTES #1: INTERDIMENSIONAL TRAVEL]

Oh, it says "notes" on there because I'm thinking I might need to do more later - there's a lot to learn here.

[He puts the page down] We all know about interdimensional travel - we're all here, so we know it can happen. From what I read here, when people normally travel dimensions, it's supposed to be somewhere along your own "timeline."

[He picks up a bigger piece of paper]

See here, this long line is a normal life. Each of the little bits that come off it mean a choice was made that changed something. That change is enough to create another dimension where someone made a different choice, and this happens every time you make a choice. Even something like deciding what I wanted for lunch today is enough of a choice to create another dimension.

So, every time you make a choice, you create another dimension. Now, normally when you change dimensions, you can only do so along your own timeline at a point where you exist. So you can't jump to a dimension where you stopped moving or where you haven't been born or woken up. It's not meant to work that way.

But then we get somewhere like, well, here, where it doesn't quite work properly. I mean, as far as I know, I've never existed in this dimension, but I'm here, so it looks like something's wrong. What I think has happened is, because Red Dwarf itself has been through a lot of interdimensional travel, it's sort of become a "magnet." Here, let me show you.

[He picks up a small bar magnet with the JMC logo on it and a small plastic bag full of small pieces of metal]

Okay, so imagine this bag of metal bits is a dimension, and the magnet is Red Dwarf. So, I'll put the magnet down here and open the bag on the floor a little bit...

[As he opens the bag, a few metal pieces are pulled from the bag and attach themselves to the magnet, but most stay in the bag]

See how some of the metal bits moved to the magnet? I think Red Dwarf works like that. It's been involved in so much interdimensional travel that it's become like a magnet for bits of other dimensions. That's probably how I got here - I got randomly "pulled" from my home dimension and "attracted" to here.

Which gets me to the other thing I worked out. You can all see my face, but this isn't what I look like. This is. [He holds up another picture] Big difference.

I didn't figure it out until Fry came and showed me what he's supposed to look like. [He holds up a page from Adventures of Delivery Boy Man] Well, not that muscular, but that's the general idea.

See, what I think happens is that, when you go to another dimension, what you look like has to change to something that dimension normally has in it. Nobody in this dimension actually looks like how I do back on Gaia, so it had to change me into the best it could do. I think the same happened with Fry, but I think his change was a bit easier. So if someone new is reading this and they look different to what they're used to, that's probably why.

[He looks through his pieces of paper again, as if he's trying to remember something]

I think... oh, wait! Abilities! When you change dimensions, you don't lose your powers even if they aren't normally in the dimension you're in. A dimension can only change your what, not your who or your how; it can change what you look like, but not what you can do. I... um, I don't know why it doesn't change your what, so I can't say much there.

Um... I think that's it. So, um... that's what I know about interdimensional travel. I hope it helps. If you want to read this again, Mr. Holly's got it saved in a... um... folder called "Vivi's Useful Notes." I might add to it later, so keep checking it. Oh, and I got Mr. Holly to leave some space for comments from people, so if you want to add something or tell me I made a mistake or ask a question, you can do it from your watches.

I hope this helped!

[The video ends with Vivi smiling and waving to the camera]

[Vivi pops back onto the screen a few seconds after the video ends] So, um, what did you all think of it?
