Wait, they got all the way to the 15 birds :O I figured they would have left it after they escaped the Goblin mines.
Though that does mean that movie 2 quite possibly starts with Beren's story.

Though I am sad that this year's (or next years, I forget when it actually happens) Mardi Gras in Sydney will be entirely lacking in gold glitter.

Also slightly miffed at the Kiwis making us wait till AFTER CHRISTMAS to watch see it this side of the pond. >: (

Beorn's story, you mean? Yeah, that's how it's looking. And I'm sure the glitter will be restocked by February, though maybe people overseas should start sending care packages just to make sure. We're with you in your time of glitter shortage, man. *sympathetic hand*

This movie is one big, slightly uneven, slightly clueless, exciteable, pretty clusterfuck and I love it

That's pretty much what I say about the book, too.

You haven't seen Martin Freeman as half of the Naked Couple in Love Actually? He's brilliant. ("Normally I'm quite shy about this sort of thing ...")

Still have to see it. Maybe Thursday.

No, I still haven't seen Love, Actually. I should probably fix that at some point. You do raise a good point about the book, and by extension a lot of Tolkien's work. Even when he's trying to do Srs History stuff there's still this feeling of him buzzing around going "I MADE UP A STORY FOR ALL THIS COOL LINGUISTIC STUFF I'VE BEEN WORKING ON FOR YEARS LET ME SHOW YOU IT? WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S BLAND AND TONALLY INCONSISTENT? LOOK AT MY SYNTAX!"

... his syntax is rather inconsistent, too.

It was Freeman's performance as John from Love Actually that made me sure he'd make a good Bilbo. Handling a jaw-clenchingly awkward situation with the timid aplomb of someone pretending nothing weird is going on ... yeah, it's great.

... Perhaps Bilbo knows that nobody else in Middle Earth has ever SEEN a hobbit? I seem to recall that being a running gag in LotR.

ANYWAY, now I've seen it. I would have preferred Bilbo to remain useless throughout, but I can see how the movie needed a place to end things. Although the idea of Proving Himself To Thorin hinges on Thorin paying attention to him, which was sort of not present in the book.

I love how excited Gollum was to have someone to TALK to after 400 or so years of talking to himself. He was like a cat who is having such a good time playing with a mouse that he can't bring himself to kill it.

Also, I may or may not have squeaked "Hi, Figwit!" in the crowded theater. My sister cracked up.

Yeah, I pointed him out to Chris and we both cracked up. XD And that is extremely true, Thorin and Bilbo basically never interact apart from post-Arkenstone debacle and post-Bo5A, so I can certainly dig that in the interest of further character development. I still think that maybe that could have been conveyed by his managing to escape from the goblins relatively unscathed (albeit mysteriously) and then had 15 Birds proceed as normal, but overall I'm still very happy with the whole thing even weeks later when I've had time to internalize everyone else's complaints.
