Help us plan our trip

Jun 06, 2009 19:13

Here's our proposed route for driving from Casa Grande to Pittsburgh the last week in July. We're looking for suggestions of people to hang out with and/or things to do along the way. (Dave, I know you saw all the cool rock formations out West during your geology summer trip -- do you remember which ones are most worth stopping for?)

In which I attempt to embed a Google Map )

Ah, Columbus! Stop by Buckeye Donuts for me, m'kay?

(I know Akron's too far out of a detour, and I doubt I'd be available anyway.)

Well, taking the more northerly route between Chicago and Pittsburgh is an option if it looks more promising.

I was in Fort Collins a year and a half ago for a conference, and nobody told me I was in the vicinity of tempeh burgers? Aaah!

If you decide to stop in columbus, I dare say I'd make the trip down. There is very little reason to alter your course to come near Ravenna, there isnt anything here to do. The Center of the Earth is about 25 minutes from me, though, but thats out by Newton Falls.

I can not help with the people to hang out with--but I found Salt Lake City to be really beautiful when I was out there for work.

Zion National Park off I89 on UT-9 West is pretty awesome, though a little out of the way. If you don't want delays and just want roadside stuff, ignore it I guess.

Bryce Canyon is more awesome for drive by stuff and also has a prtty good 1 mile hike that is fairly spectacular. Also seems closer on your route. Again off I89 then on UT-12/63 East.

Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake City are pretty nice, but if you are already delayed, not that special.

Never been to Flaming Gorge in Wyoming, but with a name like Flaming Gorge it must be good.

I actually have been to Rawlings, WY, good luck with the vegan food there.

Grand Island in Nebraska had some cheap and not seedy motels and also is big enough that you can probably find some more acceptable food there.
