Rose sat on her bed in the hospital wing, wondering if a person could ever run out of tears to cry. Was there a limited supply, or did they just keep coming and coming from some place deep inside of you? She felt like she was coming to the end of her reserve, but then she'd surprise herself and wake up with fresh tears on her face. Madam Pomfrey had insisted that she stay in the Hospital Wing until her arm was fully better, and while Rose wasn't totally sure, she suspected it was more so her Dad would know she was somewhere safe than because she actually needed to be there. Still, she was slightly glad, there had been a big crowd downstairs and she knew people would have heard by now, and the last thing she wanted was to explain to dozens of people what had happened, how she had let her little brother get taken. And there went the tears again.
Al had seen the crowd gathered around the school doors from where he was standing talking to Rosalind, but he didn't think much of it, until later, when he was back in the castle and he overheard two fourth years talking about it and heard his cousin's name mentioned. After getting the vague details from them, he raced upstairs to the Gryffindor common room entrance, and waited impatiently for someone to come out. He got a dirty look, which he ignored, and asked them if Rose was in there. He was told she was still in the Hospital Wing and he raced there instead, slowing down just outside the door, knowing how particular Madam Pomfrey was and knowing he would be less likely to be allowed to stay if he entered noisily and abruptly. That in mind, he knocked on the door quietly and opened it half way, peeking his head around to make sure it was ok to enter. He got a nod from Madam Pomfrey and he let himself in, going straight to the bed Rose was in. She looked up as he walked over and bit her lip hard to stop the tears that seemed to want to fall at a moments notice.
"What're you doing here?" she asked him, saying the first thing that came to her head.
"What d'you think, Rosie?" he said in reply, sitting on the end of her bed. "Are you ok? What happened to you?" Though her arm was almost completely healed and her hands and face had been washed by Madam Pomfrey, she still had tear stains on her face and small leaves in her hair.
"You didn't hear?" Rose replied, loathe to have to explain everything that happened but knowing that she would for Al, if he asked.
"Only that you came in with you Dad and your arm was messed up. Some kids were saying something about another attack. Did you get attacked?" Al looked at her, worry in his eyes and more than a little confusion. James and Frank had been much worse when they were attacked, so he wasn't sure why Rose was still here and why she looked so upset. "Is everything ok?"
"I.." she started, then swallowed hard. "Oh Merlin, Al, it was Grayback. You know that werewolf, the one in all the stories? He was here, at Hogwarts and me and Hugo, we were playing out in the snow and Grayback showed up and I didn't know it was him, I should have known but I didn't and he took Hugo and I couldn't do anything to stop it."
She was crying again, looking down at her hands, which were entwining themselves in the blanket on the bed. She felt useless sitting here and she was so afraid that everyone was going to hate her as much as she hated herself right now for letting Grayback take Hugo.
Al's eyes opened wide, almost unable to believe what he was hearing, except that the proof was right here in front of him. "Hugo's gone? Oh Merlin, Rosie," he said, shaking his head. He put his hand on his cousins knee. "Your Dad'll get him back though," he said reassuringly. "And mine, you know there's not much they can't do, even if they're old now." He tried to give a small grin to comfort her, but it was a bit weak. He loved Hugo like a brother and couldn't imagine what he was going through just now. He tried not to think about it, but his mind kept coming back to it.
"You staying here for a bit?" he asked his cousin. "Can I stay with you?"
"You don't hate me?" Rose asked, her head lifting in surprise. She thought once everyone knew what happened, they'd blame her. She was older, she should have done something, she should have saved Hugo and been taken herself.
"Why would I hate you?" Al asked, his surprised tone and look mirroring hers.
"'Cause...'cause I let Hugo get taken. 'Cause I should have done something." she wailed miserably.
"Don't be an idiot! Grayback could have killed you! You're lucky to be here and it's totally not your fault he did anything. He's horrible but our Dads' have beat him before and they can do it again and they'll get Hugo back. Hey, I wouldn't like to be Grayback when your Mum finds him." Al said, trying to get a little smile out of Rose and almost succeeding. "Honestly, Rosie, it's not your fault, so stop talking like it is, ok?"
Rose took a deep breath, trying to believe what Al was telling her. "Alright," she replied. "You can stay with me, if you promise me something."
"What?"
"Don't call me Rosie."
