I think a poet can do that. You're basically asking to narrow the definitions of poetry by asking whether or not a poet can or cannot deal in generalities. And unlike the current music world where the definition of music gets tossed around a lot (i.e. gangsta rap music/not music), I think poetry still retains a lot of class and taste and integrity in general that something like this is perfectly acceptable. His best work? Perhaps not, but certainly still poetry.
oh, I'm not denying that this is still poetry, only that it isn't as high quality BECAUSE of the generalities, and it was that assumption that I was leaving up for debate.
to me, talking in a straightforward manner about subjects as broad as "emotion" or "ideas" isn't all that poetic. idk, for some reason there's this instinct I have (that I feel is reflected in most "great" poetry) that if something's that broad, you need to skirt the issue at least a little bit in order to be artistic.
does that make the question a bit clearer?
and has your opinion changed at all w/ the clarification?

Maybe I misinterpreted what you were asking.
