Part 3
This is my one and probably only attempt to ever write something as a serial(one small part a week) so here is a link to
Part 1 and
Part 2. I was in the underground food court near my work, most everyone knows me there because I need to order using my tablet or write it down. I never really thought about it but when I change who I am I change the types of food I'm willing to try. This kind of makes it hard for them to get used to me like they do with everyone else. My co-workers usually just showed up and said "The Usual please." and they'd get whatever they were after and had been having for the last couple of years. I on the other hand found I didn't like the chicken salads I'd been eating daily for the last six months and decided to try out some other options, that day it was kebabs which weren't doing much sad to say because loving kebabs would make eating out late at night a world easier than it currently was.
It was while I was contemplating the sad state of my life in general that Jeremy sat down at my table and signed that he thought I was pretty and asked me out.
Typically I would have told him to go away but my hands were full and I couldn't really talk for obvious reasons, so I nodded, kind of in shock, and he smiled.
He told me he'd seen me using my tablet to order and figured I was deaf like he was. I managed to put the kebab down long enough to motion one-handedly that I wasn't deaf, I was just mute, which led to his face breaking for a second, deaf people sometimes don't like dating non-deaf people, I'd learnt this over the years in my attempts to find a partner who I wouldn't switch personalities with in my sleep(thankfully I either don't talk in my sleep very often or what I do doesn't work if I'm not awake, Alice wore earplugs when she slept because the building across the road from our place often had weird creaking noises all night).
He looked like he was going to think about it, but then he grinned a grin I fell in love with almost instantly and signed "That'll be cool. I need to go literally right now, here's my card." and he gave me a card with an email address on it and a phone number with a subtle "SMS only" note next to it, deaf people don't tend to pick up the phone. Mores the pity.
He vanished before I'd had a chance to take another bite or find a subtle way to reject him, sprinting towards my building with a briefcase, his card listed his occupation as Deaf-Poet. I finished my food, collected my stuff and followed his path back to work.
My Day.
I didn't get to go and see the musical today, the matinee show I couldn't go to because I was watching my brother and the night-time show was sold out before I even started driving over. The only other show it tomorrow and I'm watching my brother again in the afternoon, so I'll never get to see it.
I'm feeling pretty bummed out by it all to be honest.
I ended up sleeping most of the morning and then when I got back from trying to go to the play(I drove about fifteen minutes before I got the text telling me it was sold out) I slept for another four hours. I'm just exhausted right now and I don't know why. My body is fighting the last stages of this stupid cold and I'm really sick and tired of not being able to talk. Also I woke up to find Australia had lost our game in the world cup. Boo Chile, BOO!
It is interesting that I'm writing(or at least trying to write) a story about a girl who can't talk by choice while I'm a guy who can't talk because I'm literally unable to. Helps me get into her head a little bit.
Its also hard to write about people with a disability when you don't have it because things they take for granted like not being able to talk with full hands are things I actually didn't really think about. Like talking with a tablet, I have no idea how many deaf people do this versus talking with a notepad or reading lips. My character doesn't have to read lips obviously so it isn't a problem but the guy she's met does, so I have to think about things like that.
Tomorrow I'm going to go and play soccer against a team that beat us pretty solidly last time and have only gotten better since. Hopefully we'll have lifted out game.
YouTube Clip of the Day.
I'm really pumped up for The Flash.
