“Megan, are you breaking up with me?”

The pounding in her ears was driving her crazy. The shallowness of her breath was not helping the feeling of dizziness leave, and she wanted nothing more than to vomit, throw herself in the gutter and wither away. She had gotten her heart broken before, sure, but nothing like when David Cook came into her life. Well, more like when David Cook came into her life, made her fall in love, and then promptly turn into someone completely different without her noticing. Her hand fluttered to her heart, and she had to turn away from his piercing stare.

“I asked you a question,” Cook’s sharp tone cut through her mind, causing her eyes to flicker over to him. “Are you fucking breaking up with me?”

“We haven’t been together for a while, and don’t you even deny it,” Megan hissed, her teeth clenched. The venom in her voice made Cook flinch, and she couldn’t help the soft smile that appeared.

“What the fuck does that even mean, Megan? We’ve been dating for almost a year, I don’t remember us ever taking a break.”

Megan could almost laugh, the shock in his voice was so humorous to her. The fact that he didn’t even realize what was going on in front of their eyes was just another nail in the coffin, and she turned her shoulder to him, the hand moving from her chest to her mouth. She had to bite her knuckle to keep the noises from escaping because she didn’t know if they would be sobs, laughs, or some strangled combination of the two and she didn’t think that would really help.

“Look, David … I didn’t come here to fight with you, okay?” Megan took her time speaking, making sure to choose her words carefully. She could almost feel his breath raking over her, and the usual shivers she got were back against her wishes. “I came here because this was over before it even started, and I’m just … I’m doing you a fucking favor, okay? Don’t you get that? We were going to self destruct sooner or later.”

“Don’t you say that,” Cook growled. “Don’t you dare spin some bullshit that we were over from the beginning, or that we’re going to self destruct.”

Megan could hear his footsteps drawing near, and her breath caught in her throat when he placed a hand on her arm, turning her to look at him. She met his eyes with a determined look, almost faltering when the passion in his gaze overtook her. It was part of the reason she’d stuck around so damn long. Fire, it was all they were. A blitz in the pan, a passing flame that she knew he was going to douse sooner or later. After all, how many times can you fuck one person before you threw them away? She casually took her arm out of his grip, and eased herself back a few steps.

“Spare me the dramatic build up of an all out brawl with words, I’m really tired of it. If you wanted to be so into whatever the hell we even are, you could’ve spoken up months ago. This, we, are nothing more than a couple of adults who meet up and fuck in the backroom of some random tour stop and I frankly deserve better than that.” Megan wanted to scream it at him, making him understand how fed up with just being his ‘fling on the side’ and how much she fucking did love him, but her voice came out with almost a calm ring to it. It was almost worth it when the look of shock appeared on his face, and Megan felt that sob laughter bubbling up her throat again.

“Megan, I-“

“Save it, okay? It’s okay. I’m a tough girl, I know when to get out of something and I know that I’m doing both of us a favor. You’ll move on, I’ve seen how many blonde groupies pop up at your tour stops.” A sarcastic snort tore through her, and she shook her head sadly as she grabbed her purse. Frantic arms shot out at her, trying to get her to stop, but she dodged them, willing the tears to keep inside of her until she got to the car.

“Just, stop it. Please, you’re only making this hard-“

“I love you.”

Megan was at the door, her hand on her freedom when his pitiful voice rang through the quiet apartment. She paused for a breath before she opened the door slowly, a few tears making their way down her cheek.

“Then prove it.”

The door slammed behind her.
