We all have our vices.
Those last five days before Minjung’s audition were hard. Minjung would come home from grueling hours at the diner and practice the techniques she had learned in her acting class until she was too exhausted to move. More than once Junghee found her passed out on the couch when she got back to the apartment after writing all day. Junghee always covered the tall girl with a blanket before trudging sleepily to her room.
When the day of the audition finally arrived, Junghee let herself into the apartment with trepidation; equally prepared to celebrate or console. Walking into the kitchen, Junghee saw Minjung sitting at the table, an unreadable expression on her face. Junghee approached her worriedly.
“Minjung-ah? How did it go?” Minjung smiled weakly.
“I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I got the part.” Junghee let out a loud whoop and reached over to high-five the younger girl. Seeing that Minjung didn’t share her enthusiasm however, Junghee’s smile faltered.
“What’s the bad news?” She asked, dread creeping into her gut. Minjung brought a hand up to massage her temple.
“The bad news,” she sighed, “is that it’s a nail polish commercial. They only need my hands.”
Junghee was quiet for as long as she could, but suddenly a giggle broke through. She snorted with laughter, apologizing profusely to Minjung.
“I’m sorry,” she paused to catch her breath, “I’m sorry. It’s just so funny!” When Minjung glared at her, she held up her hands defensively. “Hey at least you’ll be able to say you’ve been on TV now. You’ve gotta start somewhere, right?” Minjung nodded reluctantly, and Junghee gave her a bracing clap on the back.
“Excellent. Let’s go celebrate then.”
Getting ready to go out was an ordeal, but nearly two hours later saw the two women standing at the front door tugging on strappy heels.
“I don’t see why we have to wear these. We’ll just take them off later because they hurt too much, anyway.”
“You don’t have to wear them then,” Junghee grumbled, “It’s not my fault I’m not some Amazon freak like you.” Minjung laughed and placed a consoling hand on Junghee’s back, accidentally sending a shower of body glitter cascading to the floor.
“You’re vacuuming that up, I hope you know.” She told the older girl dryly. Junghee shrugged, unapologetic.
The girls were headed to a place called TOP’s, a nightclub run by a friend of Seungri’s. According to the rumors, TOP’s was the best club for dancing in town, and they were both looking forward to blowing off some steam.
Unfortunately, as they pulled up in front of the club and saw a big sign reading Closed for Renovations, We’ll be back next Thursday! the girls realized they would have to find another place to unwind. The two women looked at each other, unsure what to do.
“We could always go to Seungri’s.” Minjung suggested, and Junghee groaned.
“But I’m there all the time!”
“But there’s free drinks!” Minjung pressed in a sing-song voice. Junghee sighed in defeat.
“Fine, let’s go.”
They turned around and drove to the bar. One of the benefits of living in a city with so many young people was that there was always something fun to do, even on a Wednesday night. Walking inside the bar, the girls were hit by the pulsing club music. The place was packed.
“I guess we weren’t the only ones with this idea.” Minjung shouted over the music. Rather than yell back, Junghee nodded and mimed getting a drink. Minjung nodded eagerly and they headed over to the bar, amused to see a slightly ruffled Taemin behind the counter, busily preparing drinks for a throng of people. Catching sight of them, he looked surprised.
“Junghee-noona, Minjung-noona, what are you doing here?”
“We’re ordering drinks! What does it look like?” Minjung called loudly to him.
“Where’s Kibum?” asked Junghee, her brow furrowed a bit. He answered her as he made them their drinks.
“He’s bartending a private function in the other room. Some work party or something.” Junghee tried not to let disappointment show on her face as Taemin passed her the vodka cranberry he’d been making. He handed a bottle of chilled soju and a shot glass to Minjung.
“Better make it two glasses, Taemin,” Minjung said, looking at her friend’s gloomy expression. He smiled and got another glass from the cabinet behind him.
“You know who to find when you need refills.” The girls thanked him and moved to one of the tall tables on the edge of the dance floor. Sitting down on one of the tall barstools, Junghee filled both the little glasses with soju and raised hers.
“A toast!” she nearly screamed over the thumping bass, “to the start of a long, successful acting career!” Minjung clinked her glass against Junghee’s and they both tipped their heads back, wincing a little at the burn of the alcohol down their throats.
A couple of shots and three quarters of her vodka cranberry later, Junghee decided she really wanted to dance. She tried to pull at Minjung’s arm to make her go too, but the tall girl just shook her head mutely and downed another shot. Junghee shrugged and hopped down from her barstool, staggering slightly before regaining her balance. She giggled at her own clumsiness, finding everything very funny all of a sudden, and made her way to the center of the dance floor
It was hot in the middle of all those bodies, a disorienting tangle of limbs pressing and moving against her. She swung her hips wildly to the music, laughing joyously. After a few songs, a man approached her. He was shorter than average, but compensated for his height with pounds of rippling muscle. He had a cocky grin on his face, revealing sharp lower canines that poked up over his plump bottom lip. He looked like trouble, Junghee thought vaguely, but the fun kind, with his brown hair spiked jauntily off his forehead and a mischievous glint in his eyes. He bent close to speak into her ear.
“Hi,” he said, his voice pleasantly light, “I’m Jonghyun. Do you want to dance?” He seemed to expect her to say yes instantly, so Junghee made a show of looking him over very obviously and appearing unimpressed. His grin didn’t falter however, so she nodded and his hands came to rest on her hips, tugging her gently into him.
They swayed together for a few songs, until the heat and the crush of bodies started to get to Junghee. She leaned forward, her heels making her exactly Jonghyun’s height, and said loudly,
“I’m going to go get another drink. It’s so hot!” He nodded and stepped back so she could pass.
Once she had fought her way through the crowd Junghee searched for Minjung. The tall girl was sitting at the same table, another bottle of soju nearly empty on the table. Minjung was sitting with her phone out, grinning broadly as she texted. Junghee sat down shakily across from her friend, letting her head fall onto the table with a thunk.
“It’s so hot Minjung-ah,” she whined pathetically. Minjung’s only response was an airy giggle as she read an incoming text. Curious, Junghee lifted her head and craned her neck to see who Minjung was texting so enthusiastically. She grimaced as she saw her cousin’s name with a little heart beside it at the top of the screen.
Shoving herself back from the table in disgust, Junghee stumbled to the bar. Catching Taemin’s attention, she spoke loudly over the music.
“Scotch on the rocks. Two fingers.” She held up two digits. Taemin looked at her skeptically.
“You look pretty rough, noona. How about some water instead?” Junghee ignored him
“Taeminn,” she whined, dragging out the last syllable of his name, “Everyone I know is in pairs! Except me,” she lamented, looking at him earnestly.
“I’m not ‘in pairs,’ noona,” he said, grinning at her, “Why don’t you give me a go?” Junghee waved a hand at him dismissively.
“You like everyone,” she slurred, “and besides, Eunsook-unnie thinks you’re cute so you’re off-limits.” Taemin’s eyes brightened.
“She does? How do you know? Does she talk about me?” Junghee ignored him, pushing herself away from the bar and staggering away, forgetting about her drink. She headed for the bathroom, which was packed as usual. Shoving in amongst the girls who were applying makeup at the sinks, Junghee fought for some mirror space.
Taemin had been right; she did look rough. Her hair was matted to her forehead and her makeup was running down her face in large black smudges. She fixed herself as much as she could in her inebriated state, and stumbled out of the bathroom.
The heat of the dance floor wafted over her again and Junghee was seized with an immediate need for fresh air. She walked toward the rear entrance without a second thought, stumbling a little.
Leaning heavily on the door to open it, Junghee tumbled out onto the concrete step. She landed hard, legs askew and knees probably scraped raw, but pleasantly numb in her state of intoxication.
“Whoops!” She giggled, trying and failing to right herself.
“Junghee?”
