I have read rather a lot of Banks, off and on. My favorite book from the Culture series (which I liked enough to re-read) is The Player of Games. My favorite Banks book of all is Whit from his non-science-fiction oeuvre: It has a "meh" sort of premise (the main character is a "deity" in a cult religion), but it's quite funny, and the end has one of the most satisfying non-violent revenge scenes I have ever read.

Is Consider Phlebas the one with the trains? I hated that one. Of the culture series, the only one I really liked was The Player of Games.

I also really, really enjoyed Whit from Banks's non-science-fiction oeuvre. I would offer to send it to you, but I've long since given it to someone else.
