[Tear stood at the edge of the field, the moon large, low, and completely full, hanging there like a glowing white lantern, casting long shadows through the grass. The melodist had told herself repeatedly that she was behaving in a completely inappropriate manner. There was no such thing as ghosts - and maybe it wasn't so bad if there were. Surely believing that some part of her brother, of Major Legretta, of Luke... if they still existed in some way, on some plane, even as ghosts, was that not better that admitting that they were gone completely? Would she really scream and run away in fright if a ghost with her dear brother's face approached her? No, no she couldn't.
Tear sighed. It was time to move on. Van and Major Legretta were no longer here. Luke wasn't either. She'd have to face the reality of that - it was time she did something productive, and if she threw out this silly fear of hers, it was all for the better and a completely acceptable place to start.
With effort, Tear forced her knees to quit quivering and straightened determinedly. She was a soldier, and even though they had had their share of differences, she was not about to let Instructor Cantabile down, or to let her see that she was afraid of something so ridiculous. She no longer needed to become a perfect soldier, but she would, by some means, shape herself and her own future the way that she and everyone else had agreed to do before their final confrontation with Van. Into something she could be proud of.]
