Heroes Fic: Diamond

Apr 24, 2009 02:13

Well here's my first Heroes fic.  It's not great, but we've all got to start somewhere, right?

Title: Sure you're sure
Characters: Peter Petrelli, Nathan Petrelli
Fandom: Heroes
Prompt: Diamond 100heroesfics
Notes: Pre-series

“What do you think, Pete?” Nathan smiled, holding the little ring box in the palm of his hand.

Peter tentatively took it from him and opened it.  He held it carefully, staring at the rather large diamond engagement ring ensconced in black velvet.

“Looks like something she’d wear,” Peter said.  Nathan raised one eyebrow in response and Peter shrugged.  His response had been purposely apathetic.  Of course any woman marrying into the Petrelli family would receive a huge rock, but that wasn’t what was bothering him.  Because Peter liked Heidi; he just sometimes wondered if Nathan did.

Nathan and Heidi had met through family connections, in other words, she was someone pre-screened by their father.  And while Peter wasn’t sure exactly what his father’s standards were, he could be pretty certain they had more to do with wealth and reputation than with potential compatibility.  And to Nathan, his father’s word was gospel, he seemed to do whatever the man said without even considering other options.

“Just… are you sure?” Peter questioned, looking up at him.

Nathan looked positively offended.  “Would I have bought the ring if I wasn’t sure?  What’s this all about?  I thought you liked Heidi?”

“I do Nathan, she’s great.  But…”

“But what?”

Peter found he couldn’t get the wording right in his head.  He remembered when Nathan had been stationed in Texas and called him all giddy about some firecracker of a blonde he had met.  Every girlfriend Nathan had (that Peter knew of anyway) had been the same basic type; they were racy, wild, brash, assertive, and incidentally, blonde.  They were the girls who spoke politely to his mother but snickered once her back was turned, who would appear at breakfast in one of Nathan’s shirts completely nonplussed, who spoke a little too loudly and never had a problem with stating whatever was on their minds.

Heidi was beautiful, that much was true, and she was kind, almost too kind for his family.  His mother had already found ways to manipulate her.  And she was clearly in love with Nathan.  But how long could Nathan be satisfied with that?  With nice?  He was constantly mocking Peter for being too sensitive and for caring about other people; telling him that a doormat never gets far in life.  How long until he got bored with Heidi and left her?

“Heidi’s great, and you’ve been seeing her for a while but… she’s just not your usual type is all,” Peter finally stuttered out.

“Oh that?  It’s called growing up, Peter.  Maybe you’ll experience it some day,” Nathan said with a grin.  “It’s not like I’m only going to marry her because Dad wants me too.”  Nathan rolled his eyes.

Peter shrugged in response.  “Just wanted to be sure you were sure.”

“I’m sure.”  He leaned in towards Peter and lowered his voice.  “Besides, Heidi may be respectable in public, but let me tell you something, she is wild in bed, man.”
Peter laughed and handed the ring back to Nathan.
