Have you seen Hunger Games?

Mar 30, 2012 18:46

My daughter just asked me about taking her 12 & 14 year old godsons to see Hunger Games. I've never read the book, and she remembers reading some of it and deciding it was too dark for her. Of course, since everyone is talking about it, the boys really want to see it. The 14 year old I think would be OK, but I'm wondering about his younger ( Read more... )

I've heard people say it isn't really suitable for younger kids, but not sure what qualifies as 'younger'.

Yes, I'd heard something similar, which is why I wondered about the 12 year old. Thanks for the input. She may have to see it first to decide if taking the boys is OK.

You could ask your local librarian *g*. It's a hot seller in libraryland. I'd chip in, but I've not read them yet.

It's definitely teen dystopia thirty. But has to be light years ahead of Twilight. Interestingly, locally at the Magic Lantern, it's opening with Mirror, Mirror in the other theater. They were giving away tickets to that on the radio. They picked a helluva weekend to premiere a musical *g*

Our local cinemas are sadly aimed only at teens. Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy didn't even play here. Very glad I made the trip to watch it in Portland with Anya. It's not as if we don't have a large enough selection of people to fill the theatre for flicks with a bit more thought put into them. Both of the actual stage theatres in town have no problem attracting crowds of older patrons, even though the ticket prices are a bit more dear. We count! Or should... It still seems odd to me that the teenage demographic is the one most American movies are aimed at.

Well, I think it depends on how sensitive the 12 year old is. There are three pretty graphic scenes that he may want to look away for, as there's actual blood and death rather than comic book smiting, but the story is actually quite good. My 11 year old godson would be able for it, but he's a SF nut and I'd still give him a heads up so he could steel himself for the 'bad' bits.

Thanks, this is helpful. I think that he may be a bit sensitive. This will give my daughter something to help decide if she needs to go see it first or can proceed with caution.

We watched it last weekend with our boys who are 13 and 14 and they were fine. It was a little intense at times but, having read the book, they edited the violence down to be more teen-acceptable. A lot is implied and a lot is "artfully" done with quick cuts, with the exception of one character, but it was a major plot point so it would have been impossible to cut out.

Thanks bunches, Cat! My daughter just read down through the replies and found them very helpful. The boys' Mom is not so much in the picture any more, so my daughter has stepped up to the plate with enthusiasm. She has an LJ (dear_0phelia) but never posts, though she sometimes beta's for Mackiedockie and I.
