My old trainer used to tell stories about how she would bring her pet MONKEY to shows back in the 70s and everyone else's horses would freak out. So, be grateful it's just dogs? Ugh, the heat. Not a fan, not a fan...

(When I was a little kid, books about horses and riding had been popular for girls for some time so I read quite a few of them, and as I recalled they never mentioned all this work and muck! But then, it's like everything else, they don't want to spoil the fantasy for little girls who dreamed of riding :)
You might enjoy the cartoons of Norman Thelwell - he was popular in the postwar period England, and one of his special and deerly loved topics was little girls who rose, and their horses. The cartoons (you can find a lot on google) are still funny :)
