I am glad that you got there in time to see him, and to be there with your mother. And that you had time to also shop and do some nice things.
A shame about the pre-payment not covering the funeral costs. My mother had arranged her own funeral and paid for it when she was in her early 80s. When she got to 90 she worried that the costs would have gone up, and contacted her undertakers, who told her no, once it was paid for it was paid for and, when she died, they stuck to that.

I'm glad to hear you got some $ from the military to help offset some of the costs (which can snowball to astronomical heights in the blink of an eye, sigh). I respect you for going the cheaper route on some things--it's what my dad wanted, too, and I'm sure yours is proud of you for it (because some of those funeral homes play hard into your raw emotions, sigh).
