Warcraft Relapse

Oct 18, 2006 03:35

The other day I woke up and I just felt so empty, unmotivated and down on myself. I thought who was I kidding. Me? Try to become a writer, or try and achieve something worthy of recognition in my life? The idea seemed preposterous. The poetry I have been writing the last week all seemed like worthless tripe in my mind. So I decided I would be ( Read more... )

ummm wow is an addiction...life is an addiction - for any of us to feel like we're 'good, productive people' we all need something to do. Work, parenting, gym junkies, roamantics, volunteers etc - we all do it to move along - not the same as moving forward (thats another branch of human personality)
You're in for a huge week if there is no-go list..what are you replacing it with? Cooking? cleaning? walking (actually as a writer wouldn't walling and cafe-sitting, people watching do you good?)
If you want to wokr on the northside of Brisbane, my child care centre is looking for lunch relief staff - if you think you'd pass teh blue card check to work in child care that is...this could be a completely inane request - you could live in perth or be a peadophile or be so abbhorently opposed to children...umm get back to me on it :)

I am starting to think that this whole WoW is an addiction theory is more than just an A Current Affairs sensationalist news item. A lot of the people I met in that game (in my guild etc), were unemployed, no real friends, alcoholics. There is even a guild called < Centrelink >.

But yeah, as far as me finding something to replace drugs, alcohol, and fantasy with, that's gonna be hard. Working is also not an option for me. I am actually on a disablity pension for severe social anxiety disorder with agoraphobia. I basically have no friends, am scared to leave the house and would rather kill myself than go to work.

Writing was the only logical thing that I could find that 'could' be a profession. I really need to focus on writing, even force myself to write. It is one of the only things that I can do, in my position, where I have even the faintest possibility (hope) of becoming successful in my life. I simply have to write, so that the future doesn't seem so scary.

YOu actually might have something there.

Have you actually considered that a book about what is essentially living would actually make for some good reading for people who aren't actually you? The best writers say to write about what you know.

A book about a reclusive anxiety prone person who is addicted to Wow and never leaves the house could, in fact, sell books. All you need is some kind of happyish ending.

I'm not making fun of you. Give it some thought. You have a computer. You're articulate. You could do it.

^ I have considered such an idea about an isolated person based on myself, who uses fantasy to escape from the reality of the situation, but I have always stopped myself because I worry that it would be judged as me simply writing an autobiography, or as me seeking attention, or something about my ego etc. These are the concerns that have stopped me from exploring a subject and a world that I understand very intimately, but I will have to give it some more serious thought.

I have never played WOW, but I do know the feeling you get. Sometimes with my gaming I take a step back and think "Well, this is useful..."

I find the trick is to do lots of other stuff as well (i.e. game one afternoon, write another) and not let it completely take all of my spare time. Gaming is productive in that it is the perfect way to relax, and I view it a bit like reading a book. Perhaps you should use gaming as a reward for good work?

P.s. RIP your WOW disks :P

Hehe, I understand the idea of using gaming as a way to relax after work or doing something productive. It's a really good idea, and works for a lot of people. But I'm an all or nothing kind of guy. Moderation doesn't seem to have been built into my hardware. It's a pity, because I did have some really fun (awesome fun), battles in WoW. I mean some of the stuff I was doing in Alterac Valley near the end was magical. When a big enemy Warrior lumbers up to you, and you freeze them in place, teleport back, fireblast, start shooting frostbolts at them, cone of cond, frost nova, cold snap (renew all timers for frost spells), frost nova, ice barrier, fire blast.

Sorry I just got carried away and lost in an imaginary battle. Oh but they were fun. :D But never again unfortunately. I still have the memories though. Pity is that when I describe them like that I am likely to get strange looks.

Some days I think I'm a writer, somedays I don't. Depends on how much alcohol / drugs I've taken, or whether I'm depressed or not.
