What's unfortunate is that children are born without any preconceived prejudice or understanding of racism, but each generation preceding them seems to find a way to engrain it into their growing minds. We have to find a way to break this cycle.
Remember the commercials from long ago where two little kids, one black, one white, are playing in a sandbox, and the voice over says something to the effect of "do you know what segregation is?", and the kids look up with this puzzled look.
But unfortunately hatred is taught at an early age, and it becomes so ingrained and most always an irrational part of the people who perpetrate it and believe it.
