Okay, what made me shiver was the unexpectedness of what was going on. It was starting to get strange by about twenty-two minutes into when I noticed that the action-packed sequences were not coming yet, when they usually start before one thirds of the episode. So that was fishy, and there was something odd about the professor but I thought he was simply going to turn into one of the teeth-guys. But then the watch came and BAM! Brilliant.
What was great about this episode was not only how it brought previous storylines together but how it managed to turn every expectation completely inside-out.
* First of all, I wouldn't have suspected that the Face of Boe's prophecy would get a twist at the end, and then it got two twists, one was the anagram thing obviously and the the other was that both Boe and The Doctor were right.
* Second, the whole Mr. Saxon thing was the biggest red herring I've ever seen, and partly because it was both a red herring and not. Everyone was expecting the Mr. Saxon thing to return at the end of the season, and in the present, since all the Mr. Saxon clues were in the present. The season finale was said to be a two-parter so I think no one suspected this storyline to come out in the previous episode. The same thing with the Master, everyone expected The Master to return and everyone suspected John Simm to be The Master and it is true but it also got people off the track of suspecting the professor. I simply love how the creators are able to mislead the press and everyone. It's so brilliant that it would be the greatest thing in my career if I could ever pull of something like that on television.
A couple of tidbits:
* I thought the Martha-Jack chemistry was brilliant. They worked extremely well together, I loved that.
* I also loved Jack's return with his previous, Doctor Who personality. I liked Torchwood but I missed the old Jack.
* Martha's comments on Rose in the beginning (especially the blonde one) were hilarious. There was also a line which made me break out with laughter but I forgot it.
* Also note the shift in relations between Jack and the Doctor. With Nine, Jack was the more manly man, really outbalancing him. Now the more active Tenth Doctor is his equal in that department as well.
* Flashbacks. Wow. And they fit.
* It was nice to hear a recap of Season 1, especially from The Doctor's perspective.
* John Simm was very odd and very good. I loved his energy, it was much different from the Mr. Saxon promos from before. It was also nice how the trademark Master things like the laughter came through, it must have been much more powerful for those who grew up on the old series, but it also wasn't awkward or bad or anything, it fit. He also seems like a nice young man, so his nice looks really balance out The Master's personality. I think he'll be great.
* It was good to see that Jack is still immortal. I thought Abaddon killed him so badly that he lost his rebirthing technique after his final wake-up in Torchwood.
Finally, my questions.
* Why did the Doctor want to leave Jack behind? It doesn't seem to correlate with his friendly behaviour from after they arrived in the quarry future.
* Also, why did Jack want to get back to the Doctor? Did he tell already? Just to travel with him again? Settle down in suburbian Cardiff? What?
* What was the Doctor's problem with Jack again? Does he look down on him because he's immortal and he shouldn't be? Envious of his enormous pe immortality? And what was that evil smile / smirk through the window?
* I'm not a Who veteran so please help me with how many regenerations The Master had left. Didn't the story go that he was done with all his regenerations? I'm not sure about where to put the canonicity of the Doctor Who movie now, as it did get canonized in Human Nature (and possibly before, not sure now).
* What was the Doctor doing with the sonic screwdriver at the end? Did I deduce correctly that he would have even blown up the TARDIS to stop The Master?
* So is he over Rose or not? Previously I thought he was in denial. But now, talking about her all happy and chipper and so on, I'm confused. Is he happy, is he sad? What's going on?
Wah, I can't wait 'till next week!
