self-esteem: not as 'self' as the name implies

I've been thinking. Self-esteem is simply how somebody views themself. This means that they could be wrong about their views, and their self-esteem should actually be higher than it is. sometimes when parents put their kids down too, they can get a strange sense of satisfaction, or so my therapist used to say :-P as you know, misery loves company, right? but then again love, some people really do suck, and there are a lot of factors that contribute to the level of self-esteem a person has. Although a person is ultimately shaped by childhood experiences, they continue to grow as person throughout life. Though when certain ideas are ingrained in them early, it is highly unlikely that anything or anyone will be able to change those ideas, no matter how hard they try.
