Bill wandered jewelry stores and antique shops. He strolled past high-priced do-dahs in I. Magnin, seeing nothing that caught his eye. All the while, seedy Santas ho, ho, hoed at him and Christmas carols blared from every storefront.
Even their beloved books didn't hold much promise. As soon as he identified a promising tome in an auction catalog, first edition Through the Looking Glass, she casually purchased it as another woman would buy a new hat.
He could be vain and believe that marriage to him was all that Laura needed. No, he must find something...
The days ticked by, closer and closer to the twenty-fifth...

Laura flung her mink coat around her shoulders and slipped out of her office toward the garage as soon as Old Jaffee closed the door behind Bill and Jake. She’d sped off in the Hudson each day for over a week once she was sure they’d left the house for their daily walk.
And every day she had returned empty-handed. There seemed to be no perfect gift for a man like Bill Adams.
Ties, socks, scarves, gloves… Nothing seemed right. Laura had visited all her favorite stores, only to discard item after item.
Emily and Elosha were even helping with the hunt, flicking through periodicals and secreting a string of salespeople through to her office with suggestions. The lady of the house had rejected each and every one. Laura needed something new, yet classic, like her husband.
Now it was almost Christmas Eve. She had to find inspiration, and soon.
