And I'm not gonna lie just to spare you feelings >> Cuz watching you suffer feels much better to me >> I'm about to lay destruction on you
(Eagles of Death Metal - ‘I Only Want You’)
If Adam thought about it, he couldn't quite tell anyone why he was doing what he was doing. He didn't feel angry, or weighted down by any heavy sadness, he just felt cold and numb as he sat in the rental car, watching the NYU campus. Marty's death didn't seem to have and effect on him, what effected him more was why Marty died. Some punk ass kids thought they would get their kicks by beating up gays, some rich kids wanted to go slumming or something of the sort. Right now, sitting in the dark of a tree, smoking a cigarette he watched the frat house with disdain and a mild curiosity. Adam was never interested in why someone did something, maybe all those kids were closet cases, or maybe two men holding hands offended their religious values. None of it made a bloody difference.
The trick was, getting the boys apart from one another, the five of them hung out together constantly and drove around in a black Honda accord, that was enough of Adam. When he caught them harassing a group of gay kids in the quad, that sealed fate. The first boy, John Ramos was a fluke, he was walking home from the Library when Adam jumped him. He drove the knocked out man to an abandoned warehouse right outside of the city, dumping the boy on the cold floor he paced for a moment, waiting for the other man to regain consciousness. When John woke up, Adam asked him politely if he remembered who he was, the blond walking in front of him, moving back and forth like some sort of large jungle cat - eying his prey.
For a few minutes the other man played dumb, and Adam allowed himself to play the game before he grew frustrated. He broke John's hand before he finally admitted that he had seen Adam before, and broke his leg in order to get the punk to admit that he and his friends jumped him and Marty. Instead of breaking bones he used the other man as a punching bag, demanding with his fists the names of the other boys that were with him. He knew who they were, he just needed reassurance. As soon as Adam got what he wanted, he put a bullet between the boy's eyes.
The second boy, Matthew Herrera was done much in the same fashion as the first boy, but a different warehouse and dumped in a different part of the river. This time, Adam informed the crying, sniveling bastard that all of his little bully friends would know that Matthew had been killed by a queer, and wouldn't that be humiliating? Instead of begging, like Adam had predicted, Matthew turned nearly rabid, despite his broken limbs he lunged at the older man, forcing a laugh and a half hop backwards from Adam. At least this one wasn't a pussy like the last one. Tired of this game, Adam put a bullet between this man's eyes too.
So when he was awaken out a dead sleep by the sound of police pounding on his front door, he wasn't surprised. What did surprise him was the fact that he was being charged with a murder that he didn't commit, someone had found the third man from the gang and killed him before Adam had a chance to. Sitting in the interrogation room, his hands cuffed behind his back, he carefully kept his head down and his mouth shut trying to figure out a way out. It could be simple, he had an alibi, but he would have to give up his lover - a married cop who would have never forgiven him.
In the end he opted to remain silent, to take whatever he had to in order to save the man he had been with, to protect him. With as much damage he had caused, maybe he could find some redemption in the one life he could save.
