Pirates Version 2.0 (spoilers cut)

Jul 09, 2006 00:01

Okay, so I saw Pirates tonight. I expected it to be good, because I liked the first one - it was a fun adventure, and entertained me in a very childlike way. Plus Johnny Depp rox (and I was recently told by two people that I look like him - anyone else see this?). And when I saw the preview for the new movie, I was apparently in the minority ( Read more... )

I thought that Elizabeth's final bit at the end with Jack was AMAZINGLY AWESOME! I mean, that was a hardcore move for her. I really liked the Jack/Elizabeth stuff as well. And it was great that Will saw her kissing him because, you know, he's a stupid elf who sucks.

Norrington's character was so great in this movie. He's so much better as a dirty, grizzled, pissed off drunk. I just thought that everything about the movie was so much fun. And the Krakken was released not once, but twice. I mean, how can anyone argue with a movie that has the Krakken?

Elizabeth's character was the one I was most impressed with, especially since I felt her "badass chick" role in the first was forced and not believable. In this one, however, she earned that title with no complaints.

You know, I'm pretty hard to please with movies these days, but this movie fucking rocked my socks.

And all these haters reviewing it were complaining that it was too long, or that it somehow hampered the film that they brought back all the characters - what - the - fuck. If you're too lazy and adhd-riddled to sit through two and a half hours of awesome, you have no right to be reviewing films.

And I think you're spot on about the ending. It was totally Christmas.

"They brought back all the characters"? WTF kind of criticism is that?? That's like "they were too faithful to the original" or "it delivered too many surprises." That's like me telling a girl "I'm sorry, you're just too good at everything to date. I need you to suck in bed or something."

Critics vs. Lawyers... which ones reside further down in Hell??

*shields eyes from actual content of post*

I've tried sending you an email twice earlier this afternoon...it keeps failing.
So yeah. Apparently from roughly 30 miles from my exit to, well, anywhere around town, I'm in Roam. I feel bad for the people who have to work at the Cingular Store tomorrow seeing as that's the only real way I have to contact anyone about it. All calls are getting sent straight to voice mail now because of it and I'll have no way of knowing if I have any missed calls unless I feel like randomly driving 30+ miles away just to get it.
But yeah, I'm here. I made it okay in the morning. I get to share a room with my cousin's 6 year old daughter tonight, so that'll be...interesting.

Saw this movie on Sat night and I agree with all of this. I was thrilled (although I'm in torture waiting for the next one now, the ending was easily as much of a cliffhanger as Fellowship of the Ring). And yeah, I almost gooshed when I saw Barbossa show up. And Geoffrey Rush is awesome. That is all.

Cliffhanger?? Dude, you'd read the LotR books when you saw the movies... what cliffhanger??

Good movie.
What i didn't like is the changes they made in Jack.
In the first one he never lies throughout the whole movie. He only tells part of the story or tells it in such a way you don't believe him. In this one he i ended up seeing him as far less cunning and a bit more (which is hard to imagine) selfish.

I'll tell you the same I told Martin:

I'm gaming terms - in the first film, Jack was Chaotic Neutral, with the possibility of leanings towards Chaotic Good. In the second film, I realized he does some things that make him seem Chaotic Evil (offering up 100 innocent souls? Lying and cheating?), but in truth by the end you realize he is in fact a Chaotic Good character to the bone, he just covers it up with a veneer of Chaotic Neutral/Evil for some reason heretofore undetermined.

In cinematic terms - they needed to make his final, noble decision as meaningful as possible (since it would prove to be at the cost of his life), so they duped us all into thinking he might be as selfish as we'd all feared. Not terribly original, thematically speaking, however certainly more effective by doing so.

Using gaming terms is a very good way of explaining it. I also
agree with your cinematic view, good point.

Also, i reviewed in my head the first movie and did think of one point in which he lied.
