Getting Discouraged

Does anybody else get discouraged with being a political minority? In the past years as I have become far less mainstream in my thinking and also more politically active. I've spend more and more time not only learning about and researching politics from an alternative perspective but also trying to change the world and change minds. Lately, in the ( Read more... )

Yes. I hear you. I think our political views are opposite, but I have the same feeling. I have stopped doing politics because it only further alienates others. I do those things that I can do on my own with a clear conscience and ignore the rest.

I'm a left-wing voter in a province that has just elected a right-wing government for the third time and a country that has elected a right-wing government for the second time (though at least it is a minority government.) I am fortunate that I have been able to find some friends online who share most of my views, though usually not all of them. (You might say I'm even more of a minority because I'm a left-wing Christian voter.) But I often find myself wondering if we are ever going to get a left-wing government into office again, especially since the supposed left-wing party has actually shifted very far to the centre in recent years.

Everyone becomes discouraged once in awhile but you have to remember that there is always a high after a low; these emotions can't eat away at your spirits forever, and you fight on. I think the system we're in right now moves over small margins, creeps, and skips maybe once in awhile, but it never gets far. Remember, conformism is not instant; the ace up our sleeve is the fact that when we create an uplift of change it can and usually is instantly applied, even almost overnight, and then all the waiting seems worth it. Dormant volcanoes are by far more patient than active ones, and because of this they are a thousand times more overwhelming when they do erupt.

Certainly. Actually, I spend a lot of my time fighting discouragement; but that's what seperates radicals of any type from those who embrace a mainstream opinion; we have to fight for our belief, and sometimes the very right to that belief. Perhaps we will never convince others to look at the way we think; perhaps we will. But no matter what, it's that struggle that makes us who we are, and occasionally achieves the results that seems so often like they will never appear in the waking world.

Most importantly, I'd offer this; it's okay to lose hope once in awhile, stare at the window and feel depressed. I view it as a time to reflect on why I feel the way I do, and come back even more prepared to spread my thoughts. Good luck, with whatever is keeping you down.
