Cynical curmudgeon writes again

I am post-50 but not old. I've been writing since elementary school but never pursued becoming published, seriously, until last year. That was when my stepdaughter (
grain_of_sand) made the comment "You should take yourself more seriously," in the context of my writing. Wow. So, I have realized I probably haven't been taking myself seriously and I am on the road to changing that.

I have written "semi-pro" at various points. I wrote for an in-house company newsletter back in the 90's. Mostly humor articles, but fairly well received. In my current position as IT architect (software architect) I partly wrote and edited an "architecture blueprint" back in 2001, and more recently have written several small articles for internal websites, and a whitepaper or two.

These days I am writing the first draft of a sci-fi/fantasy story that I will turn into a script from which a web comic/graphic novel will be done. My artist stepdaughter will illustrate, so all we have to do is finish the script and she has to get enough free time to draw pretty pictures.

I have something just over 86,000 words and I am about 10-15 pages away from finishing act two. The draft is too long for a script, but that's OK because it will also serve as the basis for the novel I will write, later.

Words usually come easy, to me. The good ideas ... not always so easily. I am interested in sci-fi and fantasy. I play (and have played) various tabletop RPG games, like Dungeons and Dragons. Currently I am only playing a "D20 Modern" game, a time travel game. Most of the reading I do is non-fiction as I have to read a lot in my job. As my interests dictate I buy books to learn about various subjects. For example, lately I've been reading about the Tao, because the native people in my story have a philosophy very similar to the Tao and I thought I should be familiar with it. Last fall I was reading books on screenwriting, so I could learn some things about that. What did I learn? That it isn't easy.

Recent past hobbies have included designing houses. I have a CAD program that lets me model things in 3D, and I finish and decorate and create images. When I finish the designs I post them to my web site, because ... well, because I can. I am an amateur, but I am here to show folks that they can do it, if they try.

I'd like to find someone who would be interested in reading what I'm writing, and offering feedback. Of course I'm interested in reciprocating. I am liberal-minded, so it's unlikely I would be offended by the subject matter. I've written about the darker aspects of human sexuality and about addiction. I was a musician in the 1970's, so I've had my own experiences with drugs, sex, and rock n roll.

yaoi_slut suggested I post here, so now I have. Thanks.
