We got in on Saturday night and walked around to get our bearings and landed at a nice little Italian place for dinner:
http://toscanacafe.net/ On Sunday, we slept off the time change and went out to breakfast at:
http://www.thebrokenyolkcafe.com/ where not all of the omelets have sprouts, but they are four egg and over-stuffed. The Border Check was so good I went back for another yesterday morning.
We had lunch at Balboa Park on Sunday:

http://www.balboapark.org/in-the-park/detail.php?OrgID=73 The food in the park was surprisingly good and reasonably priced. The former had substantial sandwiches for six bucks apiece and the latter had a killer (well... for park food...) beef barbecue sandwich for $7 which came with mediocre fries.
Sunday night we went out to a bar -- since the Padres opening game was Monday we knew we wouldn't be able to get in a bar on Monday -- so I had a really nice burger at:
http://nickyrottens.com/I'm always happy when I order a rare burger and it comes out with any amount of pink in the middle. This was the perfect warm and deep-red center with a nice brown outside.
On Mondays many of the museums in Balboa Park are closed and the rest open late, so we walked 7 blocks to:
http://www.missionsoma.signonsandiego.com/ I was disappointed by the lack of food for carnivores, but what there was -- delicious.
Monday night we were worn out from walking so we had dinner at the restaurant in the hotel:
http://www.jsixrestaurant.com/index.php The chef does a tasting menu of whatever best showcases the day's freshest local ingredients and pairs it with wine for $45 per person
Tuesday we went back to the broken yolk for breakfast, had lunch in the San Diego Zoo, where we got the food quality and price we expected in a zoo. For dinner, we took our new friend Doug's advice (one of the concierges at the Hotel Solamar) and made a short trip to the East Village to
http://neighborhoodsd.com/The waitress was super-cute and fun, the beer was cheap, and the food was incredible. The atmosphere was "contemporary foodie" so it was a noisy bar open to the street but the steamed pork buns (and rest of the menu) were not your typical bar food. While generally being a fan of ketchup with fries, I highly respect the fact that you can get neither ketchup nor ranch dressing here -- it doesn't belong with their style of food. If you want fries that go with ketchup, go get McSlop.
Breakfast today was at:
http://www.cafe222.com/No atmosphere, but the service and food more than made up for that. The tamales-and-eggs were very nice and had enough spice to be interesting without being hot. Apparently their french toast was featured on Food Network, but I was afraid it would put me in a diabetic coma so I stuck to the less-carb side
