Truck Festival 11, 19-20 July 2008

After two years of rain at Glastonbury (that is, two occasions on which it rained, when each time it seemed like two years' worth), I decided not to go this time. Instead I went to Truck. It's nearer, just south of Oxford, so I knew I could pack up and leave if the predicted rain got too much; and it's smaller, ( Read more... )

I like Chapterhouse! Well, two of their songs, anyway.

Ah, the days of listening to "Taste" or "Vapour Trail" by Ride, or Lush and Slowdive. Or even My Bloody Valentine.

I like Chapterhouse too, and all the one-word bands. But it was amusing listening to the rumours about the unannounced finale: Radiohead (in Manchester), MBV (where would they soundcheck?), Thom Yorke's brother...

My money had been on Swervedriver.

Hooray! I am going to see Ulrich Schnauss DJ at Sonic Cathedral this evening. The time I saw him (and the Long View etc) at AC30 was one of the loveliest gigs I've been to. Maps are fairly top as well, yes - my mum got me their album for Christmas. More shoegazing, I say!

Yeah, I could go with that too.

"A Strangely Isolated Place" is a really special record. And for all that people parody shoegaze, at least it was ambitious. The Pigeon Fratelli View and their paint-by-numbers 2.0asis, well.

The new Wire record is a bit shoegaze and a bit New Order, by the way. Poppiest thing they've done since A Bell Is A Cup...

By coincidence, I listened to 'Hallogallo' for the first time while writing this post last night. I hope I sound that good at 36 years old.

Without your enthusiasm, I might not have tried Ulrich Schnauss, so thank you. It's a damn shame you weren't there, but it might appear on YouTube; that said, YouTube demonstrates that My Bloody Valentine's comeback gigs proved too much for the average mobile phone microphone!

I joke about his lack of stage presence, but he was visible at the back of the other sets and came across as shy but affable. Sounds like an ultra-ruby evening: I look forward to reading about it.

j4 took me to see Maps before they were famous two years ago for two quid, the record shows. Blimey.

Thank you! I spotted it through the awning while we were drinking tea on Saturday afternoon and rushed out to capture it. Fortunately, no one noticed.

I have one Ulrich Schnauss track on my mp3 player. It's rather good :)

Fortunately, and unusually, the live sound was just right: I stood close to the stage between the speakers yet it was still crisp. His music is the sort that you'd want to listen to on headphones, immersively.
