That sounds great. I must look up those Swiss Flexi Passes.

I once had ghe good fortune to go from Zurich to Milan by train, which was the most spectacular train journey of my life. I'd like to go back at some stage and actually get off the train in some of those lakeside towns in the Alps.

You'd definitely enjoy the experience. As you say, ordinary journeys through Switzerland are spectacular, both for scenery and engineering, but I think you'd appreciate the sense of occasion as well.

The Swiss Passes really are flexible. We were able to do the whole holiday on public transport (for environmental reasons more than railfanning). And to be honest 2nd class is no hardship on the long-distance trains.
