As j4 has explained, there was some, ah, miscommunication about the emptying of our new house. Fortunately, we weren't moving in on the day of completion, so I was able to take lots of photographs and we invited the Internet to help us clear up. (In fact, the seller has now removed the larger items from the garden.) The

I gather it was rented before you bought it? But even so, the seller ought to have thrown out anything the tenants left behind. I look forward to seeing it when it looks more like a house.

I know he should have cleared up, but in a way I'm quite glad he didn't, because he'd've just thrown it in landfill, whereas we're recycling/reusing nearly all of it.

e.g. there were about 20 items of clothing left in the bath (?!) & about 15 pairs of shoes and three sets of bedding already in the bin! -- I have rescued them, some are still usable/wearable & will go to charity shops, the rest are at least recyclable as rags etc.

I am confident that it will look more like a house by the time we move in! :)

It looks incredible. I've just spent an hour helping clean a rather similar house with a friend whose housemates left her in the lurch - I can readily understand now how things might get left behind.

I have a generally charitable disposition and, given that their tenancy ended as a direct result of our buying the house, I have more sympathy with the tenants, however stoned they were, than with the seller who broke his word.

Did the tenants not have appropriate notice of the tenancy ending? That would suck if so. And yes, it is difficult to get everything sorted and removed appropriately when you're busy and it's short notice and things are just complicated. But nonetheless, that really does look like an impressive lack of even trying!

Oh, they'd have got some warning when the FOR SALE sign appeared outside (-: but I still regret being responsible for one of the insecurities of renting.

At least there's no evidence of malice (there are no curtains remaining for seafood to be sewn into which).
