Chapter 15

The plan was for Kara and Lee to fly to the Red Palace inside the cylon raider, parading as the Jabberwocky. Since the Palace was more heavily guarded than the Hub had been, as Cavil and the Red Queen had believed that Roslin’s troops would strike there first, Kara’s job was to shoot a path into the castle to make way for Adama. Once inside, they would fight their way to the innermost part of the castle to take care of the Knave and the Red Queen.

Kara smirked as they flew. These things may have been disgusting on the inside, but they flew beautifully. Lee squirmed beside her. Leoben had opted out of this battle since his loyalty was technically to the Red Queen, and he had asked Kara to keep her temper. Kara thought back to when she had first met Tigh here in Wonderland; he had told her the same thing. Curious, but unimportant. She’d shrugged, and Lee had taken Leoben’s place as her partner in flying.

“Never thought I’d be flying,” Lee said next to Kara, shaking her from her thoughts.

“Huh. Even though you have memories of being a pilot?”

“Yeah, well, my memories don’t really focus on the pilot-aspect of that life. They’re more focused on you.”

“Hmm.” Silence followed for a minute before Kara finally spoke up again. “Why’d you agree to fly now, then?”

Lee smiled. “Well someone’s gotta look out for you. Who knows what trouble you’ll get into here.” Kara laughed, and Lee continued. “Besides, I never really could say no to anything.”

Kara’s smile faded. “Except me,” she said quietly.

He looked at her seriously. “Especially you.”

“Lee…” Kara wanted to say more, but they had suddenly come into close range with the Red Palace.

“You ready, Kara?” he asked, breaking their moment.

Kara looked forward and focused on what they were about to do. “I was born ready.”

And with that, the cylon raider dipped down lower and unleashed a spray of bullets.

In one of the centermost rooms of the Red Palace, the Red Queen sat on her throne as the Knave paced the room. Red Guards were stationed at the door and the side of the podium.

The Knave suddenly stopped his pacing. He pulled out his sword and slashed at an urn, which shattered and scattered across the floor. “Why haven’t we heard from them yet?” he growled, tense. “What is taking them so long?”

The Queen remained silent. She was lost in thought about where her friend the White Rabbit had gotten off to, and what they had discussed when last she had seen him. “Knave,” she said, cutting through his rants. He visibly calmed himself by taking a very slow, deep breath. “After this nonsense is taken care of, I want you to send for the Duchess. I have not seen my dear friend in too long, and there are things I wish to discuss with her.”

The Knave froze. “But my Queen,” he began. “I recall you two had a falling out some time ago, and that she said some very treasonous things. She was quite dangerous to have wandering around.”

“I said,” the Queen said icily, “when this is finished, I want to speak with the Duchess.”

Before the Knave could reply, a messenger burst into the room. “My Queen!” Hurriedly he bowed on the ground.

The Knave tapped his foot impatiently. “What is it, you fool? Spit it out already!”

The messenger swallowed quickly. “We’re under attack!”

“By who?” the Queen asked, knowing that it would be the White Queen’s forces.

The messenger’s next words stunned by the Red Queen and the Knave into silence. “The Jabberwocky.”

“Wooohooooo!” Kara let out a happy yelp as the raider dove once again, shooting through a wave of centurions. Adama’s forces had arrived moments ago, and they were quickly overcoming the injured centurions that had been unfortunate enough to get in her way. “You having fun, Apollo?” she teased.

Lee smiled. “Feels like old times, Starbuck.” He made a serious face. “We need to break into the castle.”

“Hmm, well this guy made it once before, when we crashed into the Hub.”

“What are you suggesting?”

“Hold onto your hat, Lee. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride.”

“What?”

Before Lee could further question her, Kara yanked on a tube and the cylon raider did a sudden nose dive, heading straight down for the palace’s exterior. “What are you doing?”

Kara gave a sudden mad burst of laughter, and Lee thought that this sure was an inconvenient time for her to lose her mind. He gripped his hat, and with that, the cylon raider crashed through the roof and into one of the center rooms of the castle. The raider skidded across the floor, stopping only when it slammed into a coffin. Inside, Kara and Lee were tossed on top of one another, breathing heavily.

“You’re mad,” Lee wheezed, wondering why he was seeing small hats floating in circles around his head.

“Everyone,” pant, “here,” pant pant, “is mad.”

They untangled their limbs as carefully as they could, and when they were finally more composed, Kara tugged on the tube that would lift the raider from the ground. Only when she tugged, nothing happened. She tried again, but still the raider didn’t move. She sighed. “Looks like this frakker is done for good.”

“Can’t say he’ll be missed much by the residents of Wonderland.”

They climbed out, and Kara readjusted the Vorpal Sword hanging at her hip. “I guess we’ll continue on foot,” she said.

“I think not.” Kara and Lee spun around, where Cavil was standing, flanked by two centurions. “Hello again, Alice.”

In another part of the Red Palace, a group of Adama’s soldiers had broken through the line of Red Guards and made their way into the entryway of the castle. Tweedledee was among them. She quickly stalked along, dodging behind a pillar as a group of the royal troops rushed by her. When she darted out again, she found herself face-to-face with Tweedledum.

“Tweedledee,” she said, looking at her.

“Tweedledum,” replied her twin.

They studied one another for a minute. Finally, Tweedledee spoke up. “Why’d you do it? Why’d you run off to tell them what our plans were? You betrayed us.”

Tweedledum sighed. “You can’t fight destiny, Tweedledee. It catches up with you, no matter what you do.”

“You had a choice. I had a choice too, and I chose to stay.”

“I’m sorry,” Tweedledum whispered.

“Me too.” And with that, Tweedledee took her blade and stabbed Tweedledum straight through the heart. Afterwards she swiped her hand across her cheek to wipe away her tears, and she continued onwards.

“Knave,” Lee said. “Been seeing a little much of you lately.”

“Likewise, Hatter. Fortunately, you are disposable, and then we will never have to see each other again.” Cavil smiled. He looked over at Kara. “You, my dear, will have to pay for killing me back in the forest, as resurrection is never fun, but you will be spared. At least until I find out what I want to know.”

“Is that supposed to make me want to tell you things? Because you need to work on your interrogation skills,” Kara scoffed.

“My interrogation skills are fine. You will tell me how to get to the Looking Glass, and how to activate it.”

“Why do you want to know that anyways?” Kara asked.

“Not satisfied with having the Red Queen as your toy here in Wonderland?” Lee added.

Cavil ignored him. “The Looking Glass will lead our people to our true destiny. We will move beyond Wonderland. There is more out there, and I will find out what it is. And you, my dear, are the key. I will dissect you until I find out exactly what I want to know.” Cavil turned to the guards. “Kill the boy. I’ll take the girl.” With that, they advanced.

Chapter 16

Kara pulled the Vorpal Sword out of its scabbard. It thrummed once, twice, preparing itself for battle. Cavil glanced at it, readying his own sword. “I see you’re using my weapon, Alice.”

Kara sighed dramatically, totally exasperated. “For frak’s sake, don’t call me that. And this sword here doesn’t seem to like you much, Cavil. It’s sort of giving off the ‘C’mon let’s kick his ass vibe,’ actually.”

With that Cavil feinted to the left and attempted a low stab. Fortunately, Kara was younger, quicker, and wielding a far more badass sword. She swung her blade around, and it clanged against Cavil’s. A small crack appeared on Cavil’s sword, and the two blades wrenched apart.

Kara rolled to the side. Glancing at Lee, she noticed that he was having some difficulty. Cavil swung at her again, and she distractedly parried his blow. She feinted to the side, and he thrust his blade into the spot she had just occupied. Meanwhile, a hard blow to Lee’s bicep had sent his knife skittering across the floor. “Lee!” Kara screamed.

She tossed her sword over, and grabbing it, Lee swung it and instantly impaled one of the centurions. Unfortunately, this left Kara without a sword. Cavil suddenly loomed over her. Kara scrabbled across the floor to grab Lee’s forgotten knife, but Cavil grabbed her by the leg and wrenched her back. Kara swung around and tried to punch him in the face, but he held his sword in front of her. “You can’t kill me,” she sneered. “You said you need me. I’m not afraid to die.”

“I may not want to kill you, but I’m not afraid to leave you in pieces either.”

“One thing you should know,” Kara said, carefully keeping her gaze on Cavil rather than looking at what was happening behind him.

“Oh? What’s that?”

“There is no more Resurrection Hub.”

Cavil’s eyebrows knitted together, and his grip on her tightened. “I guess I’ll just have to make sure I don’t die, then. Now where was I?”

He pressed his sword into the skin of her shoulder, and a small trail of blood leaked out. “One more thing,” Kara said.

“What?!” he snapped.

Behind Cavil, Lee suddenly swung the Vorpal Blade, and Cavil’s head rolled off to the side near the crumpled centurions. “Off with his head,” Lee breathed.

As Cavil’s body collapsed to the ground, Lee grabbed Kara, lifting her up. He latched his mouth onto hers, and they hungrily kissed for a minute before Lee pulled back. “Okay, okay. We should get going before the Old Man catches up to us. I have a feeling he’d have more than a few things to say about this.”

He reached down to pick up his own blade, and then handed her the Vorpal Sword, and taking it, Kara placed it back into its scabbard at her hip. “Right. Now let’s go find us a Red Queen.”

* * *

The Red Queen was in her throne room, still seated regally. She suddenly felt groggy, like she had been asleep and was in the early stages of awakening. She blinked, looking around her. What was happening again?

The door crashed open to reveal the Mad Hatter and a girl that the Red Queen had never seen before. She had straight, blond hair that was tied back in a ponytail, and she was wearing a suit of white armor. White armor… looked to be fashioned by none other than the White Queen.

The Mad Hatter suddenly engaged in combat with some of the Red Guards stationed around the room. The girl was staring straight at her. The Red Queen wondered what she was going to do. And then she attacked.

* * *

Kara couldn’t help it. She and Lee had planned to merely incapacitate the Red Queen for Adama, but when she’d walked into the room and seen one of those frakking Sixes dressed in that skin-tight red dress, her mind had flashed back to Caprica when she’d been sent to retrieve the Arrow of Apollo.

Welcome back to Caprica, lieutenant. Like what we’ve done with the place? Kara remembered her taunts and ran at the Queen. Surprisingly, the Queen looked slightly shocked by this outburst, but she jumped up at last minute and met Starbuck’s swing of the Vorpal Sword with a red blade of her own. The two swords clanged.

C’mon, Starbuck. Got anything left? Kara let out a furious cry as she attacked the Red Queen again. The bitch was stronger than she looked. Kara suddenly felt herself being blown backwards by some unknown force, and she smashed into a column. “Kara!” she heard Lee yell, and suddenly the Queen was on her again.

The Queen grabbed her by the throat and lifted her up. Kara choked, and her hands clawed at the Queen’s arms. She looked around for the Vorpal Sword, where it lay a few feet away. “Who. Are. You?” the Queen asked, lifting Kara higher.

Kara lifted both feet, and aiming them both at the Red Queen’s chest, she kicked out as hard as she could. The Red Queen flew back from her, and Kara sucked in a breath. She scrabbled across the ground and grabbed the Vorpal Sword. She lifted it quickly, and limped over to where the Red Queen was sitting up. Kara raised the sword above her head, ready to stab it straight through the Red Queen’s chest and end this godsforsaken thing.

Just as she was about to strike, the air rippled, and Gaius appeared in front of the Red Queen. “Starbuck! Wait.”

Kara hesitated, but only for a second. She swung the sword down, not caring if she accidentally killed Gaius as well; the Six had to die. That second was enough, though, for Gaius to spirit both himself and the Queen away.

They appeared on top of the podium where the throne sat. “What gives, Gaius?! You wanted me to kill her to avenge your friend or whatever. Now get out of my way.” Kara stamped up the stairs towards them.

The Red Queen was confused. “What’s she talking about, Cheshire? What friend?”

Gaius ignored her for a minute. “Kara, listen. She was under a sort of trance by the Knave. She wasn’t herself.”

The Queen shook him. “What’s happening?”

Kara paused, realizing that the Red Queen seemed truly distraught. Why am I hesitating?

Gaius was now facing the Queen. “My dear, the Knave has been using you to wreak havoc in Wonderland. The friend she is talking about is the Duchess.”

“What about the Duchess?” the Red Queen asked.

“She’s been boxed. We can unbox her, fortunately, thanks to the Knave’s timely demise.” Gaius looked over at Kara. “And thanks to Starbuck, here.”

“Starbuck?” The Queen looked back at Kara. “Who is she?”

“Why, she is Alice. The Alice, though she will deny it most vehemently if you ask her about it.” Gaius smiled that eerie wide grin of hers, and Kara felt the rage begin to leave her. What do I do now? Her sword seemed to calm down, its hum growing smaller, as if it sensed the fighting was done.

Suddenly, the two doors into the room once again burst open. Adama flooded in, followed by his troops, including Helo and Athena. Finally, Roslin stepped into the room, looking regal without a single drop of blood on her. Roslin looked at the Red Queen. “Sister,” she said. “It seems as though you’ve somehow come to your senses again. I can feel it.”

Kara felt completely shocked. What in the world was happening?

“Apparently we have much to discuss,” the Red Queen said. She gripped Gaius’s paw, and then turned to him. “Thank you, Cheshire. Now…” Looking at Roslin, the Red Queen straightened. “Let’s get to it, shall we?”
