"Near."

Mello's voice followed the firm knock on the door. He wasn't afraid to say that name aloud any longer, the whole place was completely empty. ( Read more... )

Near didn't feel well. Usually he felt sub par, alright, nothing outstanding or great. But now...now he felt terrible. His mind felt hazy and clouded, his chest as if an anvil had been dropped upon his ribcage.

Yes Near didn't feel well, and in most senses of the word he wasn't.

Mello's voice and knock on the door caused him to shudder, fingers tightening around his knees as he sat curled in a ball. Patch had been hidden under a loose floorboard that was covered by the couch. Perhaps he'd be spared unlike his counterpart.

After a few minutes of silence he finally rose, sluggishly moving to the door and unlocking it.

Silence had been worrisome, especially in a situation that was making Mello too nervous for his own good. He was at the edge of banging on the door harshly when Near finally opened it, sparing the both of them a headache.

Frowning, Mello stepped into the room, not bothering to unlock the door for when Noir made his appearance. "Near," he said, turning to look at the pale boy who somehow looked paler than ever. "I'm not going to hurt you."

He'd moved to the side as Mello pushed past into the room, keeping his head down as Mello spoke. There was no eye contact. There rarely ever was.

"If you are not going to hurt me, what are you going to do Mello?"

A almost silent question, but a question never the less.

Near's words shouldn't have hurt as much as they did. At that moment, Mello realized that his obsession with making Near look at him had only caused the boy harm, more than Mello could have ever imagine.

I'll drive you insane, like you always drive me.

So it was true? It was Mello's fault that Near was in such a state? Words felt thick on his tongue, it was difficult to articulate them. Mello could only stare at the boy he was slowly destroying, not daring to take a step towards him.
