Lately I’ve been having a real emotional struggle about whether or not to re-sign with the same hagwon in Gwangju. I know y'all aren't in Korea, but maybe you can help me unpack my emotional stuff.
Here’s what I’m thinking:
  • Aside from a few random issues, my hagwon boss treats me really well. She’s very considerate and kind. This is NOT typical ( Read more... )

Despite what you think "might be more 'right,'" what do you feel is right my dear?

My two cents: You're young, you're single, your life is full of opportunity. When can you travel the world like this again?

You're definitely right. No matter what, I want to come back for another year. I guess I'm just not sure about whether or not to stay with This School, y'know?

you talk about your boss, your kids, your apartment, but i think it's all a circle you dance around something you're having a harder time saying: you came to korea to go on an inner journey, and the inner you is screaming that you haven't finished getting what you need out of this experience yet.

i think the people who love you would certainly understand that.

Thanks. I haven't really thought of this as an inner journey, but I suppose the quiet and solitude that is here can make it such sometimes. :)

CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU TO BE HERE!

Can you negotiate an extended break? Your boss must know that you are a free agent now at the end of the year. Perhaps you could tell her that you would love to stay, but you miss your family and would really like to be able to spend more time with them, and that this is affecting your decision.

That's a good point. I think even one more week would make a big difference - it would enable me to make a few side trips (like to Philadelphia, etc.)

I'd take the two weeks off and then come back to the same school. Of course, you're the only one who can weigh the pros and cons, but that's where it looks like the scale tips to me.

I'm thinking so, too. It's just family is so important... but OTOH, this is a situation I know, like, can save money at, am doing well at, and I do know I'd like to do Korea for another year. So it seems to make sense.
