Death greeted him in the form of blood.

Nino stared at the blood that tainted the white sink, and the inside of his head slowly turned into white as he wondered why did he just coughed blood - he felt perfectly fine until the moment he coughed it out. Now he felt nothing but pain on his chest, and he felt sick just by thinking that he just coughed out blood; he thought that kind of thing only happened in the movie.

He turned the tap on, and he watched as the water slowly washed it away.

Something was wrong with him; that was for sure.

Not wanting to take any risk, Nino went to the doctor a few days after. He sat on the lobby, waiting, and he watched so many people came and went; he watched people dying, watched children running around energetically even though they were pale as ghost, watched a wife crying over his husband’s death -

So many things happened, and Nino realized it could happen to him too.

And he was right, of course. He went through endless examination without really understanding what it was that he was doing, and at the end of the day, the doctor read all the report while Nino waited, knowing that something was wrong with the way the doctor’s eyebrows were knitted together and how his thin lips were pursed into a tight line.

“Sir.” The doctor told him. “You’re gravely ill.”

Death was lurking around, and Nino could feel that it had set his sight on Nino, somehow.

He didn’t bother to go into details, nor did he bother to inform his family about it. The doctor told him that he needed to be admitted into the hospital soon. “You needed a treatment.” The doctor said. “We need to treat you immediately.”

But Nino brushed it off. God, he had live for almost 30 years with occasional flu and fever here and there; Nino had live with the thought that he was going to live forever. He was going to die, of course, but not now, not this soon, so when this happened so suddenly, he was having a hard time on believing it.

So he went home. He went home only with a plastic bag full of medicine, thinking that he was still going to live on forever.

But that wasn’t the case, of course. Days soon turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, and Nino was…dying. The medicine did little for him, and he started coughing out blood more often. There were days when he felt so tired, and it went by without him really remembering anything but pain. But he was still thinking stubbornly that he was going to live forever.

Until one morning, he looked into the mirror, and he didn’t saw himself anymore. The person that was looking back at him wasn’t him at all - the person was too pale, too ill, and Nino could almost see Death behind him, waiting for him to accept it, and Nino finally realized that he was such a fool.

He was going to die.

Eventually, he accepted it. As he splashed cold water to his face, he accepted the fact that he was dying, that he needed help; maybe it wouldn’t help that much, considering his condition, but he might as well try. He called his family, and he received a slap on the face as he told his mother, but it wasn’t as painful as he then saw her broke down into tears. But despite everything, his mother told him that they were going to make it through, somehow. They were going to help him; he was going to recover, and he’d be able to continue on living and gave her the grandchildren she always dreamed of.

Nino didn’t have the heart to tell her that Death was already beside him.

Months passed, and if anything, Nino made little progress on his illness, but at least he didn’t look that bad anymore; at least, he didn’t look that much like a zombie anymore. He looked fairly fine from the outside - a bit thinner and pale, maybe, but other than that, he didn’t look like a dying person. But Nino could feel it; he could feel the illness growing inside him, eating everything it could, and even though the doctor and his family kept on supporting him and saying positive things to him, he knew that they knew, and that there was nothing they could do to stop it.

And so, that led Nino to think, that he had every right to decide on how it was going to end; how his life was going to end.

He asked them to stop the treatment; he asked them if it was okay for him to go back to his small apartment. It wasn’t okay, of course, but he nearly begged for it and after talking to his mother and trying to make her understand that it was his choice; he was finally able to go home. He was finally able to smell the unique scent of himself that lingered on his futon, able to play and finished all the video games he left hanging -

And he decided that it was time to meet Ohno.

All this time, he kept it a secret from his best friend. Ohno lived far away from him; he lived in the Tokyo with his boyfriend, Sho, and Nino knew that he was living happily there. Sho worked as a news anchor while Ohno opened a little bakery, and he loved to tell Nino about his days on the bakery, about his love life, about everything. Even when he stayed at the hospital, Ohno still called him, not knowing that Nino was lying on the hospital bed as he told him happily about his day at the bakery.

But Nino didn’t mind at all; he loved Ohno’s voice after all.

And to be honest, he loved him. He loved him so bad, but he knew that he wouldn’t be able to tell him about it. He didn’t want to ruin the happiness that Ohno was feeling right now, and he was sure the news about him dying would definitely ruin his perfect life, and he didn’t want that. But he wanted to see him; he wanted to meet him for the last time so bad. And so, he called him.

“We’ll be going there this weekend.” Ohno’s soft voice greeted him over the phone. “Sho was taking a break after all, so, see you there?”

And Nino couldn’t get any happier. He tried to keep in shape - he needed to look healthy enough so Ohno wouldn’t be suspicious after all, and even though his mother didn’t agree on how he was determined to keep it as a secret, Nino was determined enough to keep it as a secret. Dressed in his favorite t-shirt and a sweater over it, Nino went to the park where he and Ohno used to play as a kid, and he waited.

He hasn’t waited that long when finally a car pulled into a stop not too far from where he was sitting, and he watched as Ohno climbed out of the car. The older man was talking to someone inside the car - who he believed was Sho - before then he went to the park, right where Nino was. The older man was running with a wide smile on his face, and Nino stood and opened his arms, accepting Ohno into his embrace and nearly being knocked down by the force of it. But at that moment, he was happy. He hugged Ohno tightly as the older man hugged him back with the same amount of strength; chuckles was spilling from his mouth as he said, “I missed you, Nino” so sweetly, making him almost cry.

“I missed you too.” Nino said as he let go. “Where’s Sho?”

“He’d just pick me up again later.” Ohno told him with a smile, but then it disappeared as he stared at Nino; worries were written all over his face as he tugged on Nino’s hands gently. “Are you okay? You’re pale.”

“I’m fine.” Nino told him with a smile as he led Ohno to sit beside him on the bench. “How are you?”

And that simple question has launched Ohno into his talkative mode. Ohno talked about lots of thing; he talked mostly about his bakery, about his fishing trips, about the new ramen restaurant that just opened near his house, about Sho that was sweet enough to take days off and spending it together with him -

Ohno was bright; he was brimming with life, with the energy and spirit that Nino didn’t have anymore. He watched the way Ohno smiled throughout his story, watched the way he pouted sometimes when he remembered something that annoyed him, watched the way Ohno’d licked his lips - a habit of him that never disappear; he watched all those, and Nino couldn’t help but feeling grateful.

He was grateful because he could only see ‘life’ in Ohno, and Death was nowhere to be found around him.

And please let it be that way, he prayed quietly. Please let him lives for a very long time, with the same amount, if not more, of happiness that he was feeling right now.

And when he was thinking like that, Ohno turned to him with the widest smile he could ever show someone, and he hold Nino’s hands tightly. “Ne, Nino. Let’s go eat something.”

I love you so much.

The next day, Nino couldn’t wake up.

No, well, he could, but he could barely move his body. He just lay there, on the bed, eyes staring on the ceiling as reality dawned on him.

Today would be the day.

He closed his eyes, and he was more aware of everything around him now. He could hear the sound of the water running from the sink, could smell the delicious scent of soup that his mother might be cooking right now, and he could even heard the sound of the postman’s bicycle outside the apartment. Somehow, it felt like he could sense, know everything; it seemed like when someone was going to die, the world shared it secret for him, even for just a while.

Suddenly, his phone rang, and even without looking at the caller ID, Nino knew who it would be. With little strength he could gathered, he took his phone that was placed on his pillow, and he put it on speaker. “Hello?” He whispered.

“Ohayou gozaimasu~” A singsong voice greeted him, making his smile. “You lazy bum, I bet you just wake up.”

“Yeah.” Nino mumbled into the phone. “I played video games last night.” It was a lie, of course; he immediately fell asleep right when he got home.  “What’s up, Oh-chan?”

“What day is today?” Ohno asked instead, and he sounded so eager.

“17th of June.”

“And what happened that day?”

Nino smiled. “It’s my birthday.”

“Good boy!” Ohno suddenly laughed, and the sound was so heavenly to Nino’s ears, even though he was having difficulty breathing now. “Happy birthday, Kazu!”

“You wake me up just for that?” He scolded Ohno playfully. The older man laughed once again, and Nino couldn’t help but letting a chuckle slipped past his lips. “Well, thank you.”

“You should say that after you saw the cake I made you!” Ohno told him. “So you better go get ready now, because I’m going to your place with your cake - Sho-chan will be coming too!”

“I’m ready.” Nino mumbled to no one in particular. “I’m ready.” He was silent for a while, before then he said, “I’m still a little sleepy though, so would you mind giving me more time to sleep?”

“Fine.” Even without seeing him, Nino knew that Ohno must be pouting right now. “We’ll come around 1 pm then, how about that?”

“Sounds great.” Nino agreed, though he knew that by the time he came here, he wouldn’t be here anymore. “Well then -“

“Wait!” Ohno stopped him. “You said you wanted to sleep, so let me sing you something.”

“…Okay.”

“Okay, here goes.” Ohno took a deep breathe, and then a sweet voice could be heard coming from his phone.

Happy birthday to you.

Happy birthday to you.

Nino closed his eyes as memories started flashing before his eyes; he remembered the first time they met, when they were nothing but small children. He remembered when they almost blew out their chemistry lab at their high school just because their curiosity was top-notch. He remembered when Ohno first met Sho, remembered how easy it was for him to fall in love with him, and he remembered when Ohno decided to leave for Tokyo to live with him, leaving Nino alone at their hometown.

He remembered watching Ohno left, remember regretting not telling Ohno how much he loved him.

He remembered how easy it was to fall in love with Ohno; he still did, even until now. But he’d let it be his secret, a secret that he’d carry to his grave.

Because Ohno deserved all the happiness he could get in his life.

Happy birthday, dear Kazu.

Happy birthday to you!

“Kazu? Ka~zu?” Ohno called out again and again, but he received no answer; so with a sigh, he hung up and he immediately turned around to his lover, who was lazily sitting on the sofa as he flipped through channels mindlessly. “It seems he fell asleep again.”

Sho chuckled. “He must be tired. Well, it was still early in the morning after all, baby.”

Ohno pouted as he placed his phone to the table and he moved to the kitchen - it was a good thing that his lover rented an apartment for them for a while, so he could make a cake for Nino’s birthday. “I promised him that we’ll be there at 1 pm though.”

“Right.” Sho replied as he followed Ohno to the kitchen, watching him putting the cake on the oven. “I can’t imagine how Nino’s face would look like if we told him that we’re going to adopt a baby - and named the baby after his name.”

Ohno smiled sheepishly as he made sure that the cake was placed deep enough into the oven. “I hope he’ll be happy.” He said then. “I want him to be happy.”

“He will, dear.”

“Hopefully so.” Ohno stared at the cake for a while with hopeful eyes, wishing that the cake would turn out to be good, wishing that today, everything would go as he planned. He’d come to Nino’s house, gave him the cake, bring him out for dinner and then they’d told him about the baby. It excited him, really, and he couldn’t wait to see Nino’s reaction. “Hopefully so.” He repeated.

And with a long, last look, Ohno finally closed the oven shut.
