If this is all the details of the incident, you may have overlooked a step of protocol or two. Did you have anyone checking ID at the door? Was this a general "if you know you can go" kind of thing? I'd suggest staying with people you at least know casually and not anyone who shows up out of nowhere. Also, what's to gain by allowing under-aged people into a place where alcohol is flowing freely? I say keep the attendance policy to 21 and over.

As far as the statement, "since that’s pretty much the only reason nowadays to go...to hang out with friends and have an excuse to wear costumes and get drunk," I haven't seen this to any significant degree. Maybe it's the cons I go to, but for the most part everyone seems genuinely interested in discovering new anime / manga, dressing up, showing off, seeing and being seen, meeting voice actors and musicians, and yes...hanging out with friends AND making new ones. Saturday nights are spent by the majority of the "under 21" demographic at the dance, socializing, and in the gaming room. ( ... )

Just a short reply to the getting drunk comment. For ACEN... my first year was awesome, there were people in costumes everywhere and everyone was taking pictures and having fun. That year, compared to last year and this year was probably the best I've seen. This year there were less costumes... (and by costumes I mean ones that people actually worked on and didnt just throw together at the hotel or from any peice of anything that they could find ( ... )

I'm in total agreement with you, and it's not only happening at ACEN. Nearly all conventions and hotel staff are cracking down on the drugs and underage drinking because it has been a major problem for several years. My father who is a fire Lieutenant has taken con attendees from Katsucon to the hospital to get their stomachs pumped because they drank alcohol excessively. It has got out of hand and conventions/hotels have been sued for liability, which is one of the reasons why room parties are becoming rare now. Anime conventions are another excuse for partying- hardly anyone goes just for the Anime anymore, or at least from what I've seen in my own experience ( ... )

Daaamnnnn thats intense - and I'm sorry to hear all of the stress that this put you through, but I'm glad to read that everything is ok now and no serious damage was done to you.

Heh, create your own convention? That would be wicked awesome! And to think...by word of mouth alone you'd have one hell of an attendance rate!

I'm really sorry to hear that shit like this happened. I really do think its said idiots (points to comment I left above) who ruin it for the people who are actually trying to enjoy themselves without causing problems ( ... )

::hugs:: Sorry this went down like this, but it sounds like your plans to be completely above-board and CYA next year are a good idea.
