i find it important to remind people about the Dallas nurses. what happened to these two people, and the organizations they work in.. it exposes the punches made through the delicate lacework in health care.

they need protocols put in place, or else it's given opportunity to spread (as feared). they need to understand what they're dealing with and ( Read more... )

It really does make you wonder how much it's spread by semi-casual contact since they were baffled about both nurses in Dallas

Though regardless of what I was "advised" I wouldn't go near family for some time after being anywhere near Ebola. Though being exposed day after day to other infectious diseases and taking the usual precautions, I guess she would've thought she did all that was necessary.

One of the issues is actually that we have BETTER healthcare. Protocol that was in place for use in West Africa actually ended up being insufficient for our big fancy hospitals because we do more invasive procedures. One of the theories floating around is that the virus was passed when the nurses were intubating Mr. Duncan, which very rarely occurs in W. Africa. It's very difficult to have appropriate protocols in place when no one in the western hemisphere has ever experienced the disease in this context.

Of course, I agree with you completely. They should have started out with the strongest possible protections in place, rather than adding precautions after the fact. I do hope that both of those nurses heal. It's very scary to imagine how vulnerable healthcare professionals are sometimes.

It is a very scary situation. Proper protocol across the board is needed. I heard on the radio that Obama has recently put someone in a position to oversee this. I hope everyone can get their act together before this disease spreads even faster. I don't think I could ever see myself working in the healthcare field. They have my utmost respect.
