Oh, I like the new hair! Very flattering! I think layered long hair is much better than all one length. I'm growing mine out in layers, and it makes it so much fuller and frames my rather round face very nicely.
Joyce is not an easy writer, that's for sure. I have only ever read Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I have read some excerpts from Ulysses, the Molly Bloom monologue for instance, but it's not easy certainly!
Have you seen the film Bright Young Things? It's the dramatization of Vile Bodies, directed by the wonderful Stephen Fry. I haven't read the novel, but perhaps the movie would give you a better sense of the novel as a whole and the characters might come off a little less stupid. Basically, most of the characters are like Julia's friends in Brideshead, to the point now and again that you want to bash their heads together for being so frivolous and silly. Anyway, it's out on DVD now, so check around and see if one of the video stores near you has it. It was a good film, beautifully acted.
I've been trying to read Ulysses forever. I think I'm going to give up and wait until I'm older, or until I have to read it for a class. I've read Portrait of the Artist; we had to read it in my 12th grade AP Literature class. I liked it a lot.
I have not seen Bright Young Things, but I've heard of it. I should check it out. Yes, all the characters are like Julia's friends from Brideshead- I think I'm just in the mood for something a little more substansial. But I will definitely keep my eyes open for the movie.
Oh, and yes I am often forcefully struck by how beautiful things, people, and music can be. I can be brought to floods of tears by people dancing beautifully, or a piece of gorgeous music like Vaughan Williams' the Call, which I am just learning to sing with my voice teacher. It gives me goose pimples every time I sing it. I can stand for hours in front of beautiful paintings, ignoring those around me, entranced by the beauty of the harmonious colors and uses of light of a landscape or a portrait or a still life. All that to say, I know what you mean and am glad to hear that I'm not the only one!
