One thing that's been said a few times since the whole expenses thing came up is 'this will harm democracy!'.

Um, how is having an accountable government who can't claim ridiculous expenses harming democracy?

One problem is quite where you put the level of ridiculousness or not. It's not clear how cut back the expenses will be. One problem in the past has been that the system made it very hard for people who weren't already very wealthy to run for Parliament. For example, a headteacher can be on 80-100 grand a year. Switching to being an MP can cut their pay, and incur a mountain of other debts. Not the nicest of situations to be in.

It will really depend what comes out of the Kelly review and just how stripped back the expenses are.

Of course, that's entirely separate from a man paying himself expenses via a shell company.
