Me too! And IIRC when you emigrated, I think it was even the same year. Rescue Rangers was actually the first bit of American TV I saw, on my first day in the US. \random
And, yes, new!Trek fandom kind of pulled me in, too, to my own enormous surprise, 'cos I never found any flavor of Trek at all interesting, not least because, yes B5 >>> everything Trek. (And, as you say, what I knew of the franchise I knew mostly through cultural osmosis, like my professors quoting Picard and whatnot). But all of a sudden I'm reading meta and staying up too late reading fic and WHAT. In a good way. XD
We emigrated in 1990 (April 5th, actually). And I knew 6 English words. So my cousin and I would come home after school and watch what later became the Disney Afternoon cartoons. Ah, cultural osmosis. ;)
It was very interesting to watch the B5 vs. Trek fandom cold war unfold, especially given how fond JMS was of Trek and how Majel Roddenberry was on B5 in the 3rd Season (Troi's mom or not, she'll forever be Lady Morella to me.)
I think a lot of the appeal, for me, stems from the brilliance of the way the characters are written and portrayed. I've been mulling just how new!Kirk shares so many character traits with 1st season John Sheppard (and no one can tell me that Sheppard wasn't an homage to the original), which explains his appeal for me. Plus the power-dynamics. Oh I love power games.
Gah. I'm so awful about answering comments when I'm busy. Of course, this summer was just awful in general.
Ok, so SG:A is indeed full of awesome - for the first season. It trails off and I stopped watching at the beginning of season 4, because they just really killed of my favorite characters for no reason.
