Tom turned around. There she was. Colors swirled around her but he didn't notice. The only movement he saw was the tumbling of the curls of her dark hair down her cheeks to settle on her shoulders. Her smile was more angled than he remembered, but who knew? Maybe canvas creates sharper curves than human lips.
For a moment he couldn't do anything. To see her again, and like this... Was the future toying with him again? Was she toying with him? Even if the museum sold him the painting, he couldn't hold it the way he held her, he couldn't kiss it the way he kissed her, but most of all the painting couldn't laugh like she could. Alana in Repose emitted an amazingly peaceful joy but for Tom Baldwin it was tantalizing beyond belief.
He had had eight amazing years with her within the blink of an eye and within the same period of time she had been taken away again, as if she had never existed in the first place. As if she had been killed with her first husband and son instead of being forced to embark on some ridiculous-sounding journey through time and all logical laws of the universe to wind up a 4400. Or worse, oil on canvas.
Maybe he should have just stayed in her world. At least she was there.
