you may know this, but SAD is closely associated with serotonin production in our bodies, which decreases when there is less sunlight - serotonin production requires lots and lots of sunlight, which we don't get much of in colder regions. i notice myself being more depressed in winter since having moved to teh states, because i am used to lots and lots of light around this or any time of year. this is also why light box therapies seem to prove useful for lots of people.

all the "capitalist system not being mind and body health sensitive" arguments aside, of course. i would enjoy living in a world where i could take mental days off any time i felt like my body required that of me, but that is way too idealist. unless i find a job where i can work from home and have optimal flexibility.

I know all about the seratonin and SAD connection. I was actually diagnosed with it a few years ago (which I've since more or less gotten out of), but I had this stupid 4am idea that maybe people only get depressed in the winter because they're expending all of their energy when their bodies are telling them to eat and sleep 24 hours a day.

I wonder if anyone has ever done a psychological report on the effects of weather. Perhaps I just selected my new field. ;)
